4efte ep82

Hello everyone,

Actually experiencing a superb problem with an Ep82 4efte. Engine starts on first try. But wont start again if missed.
Once its running, it runs extra rich and rpm cuts at 4k. Also unplugging the map sensor brings no change. Running on stock ecu, stock fuel pump, NGK IK20.

Seen this more than a few times in past years.

Check the wiring to your engine temp sender (it will be the big green plug on the thermostat housing. If this wiring breaks (common once the distributor O-ring has perished above it) or the sender itself goes faulty you can experience poor hot starting and sluggish performance as the ECU just uses a set value instead of the actual signal.

You didn't mention checking for fault codes so they might be worth a look too mate.

Thanks for the reply Jay.
Will check this asap and revert back to you mate. Will carry on diagnosis to check the fault.
Thanks again.

Back again.. problem still the same..
Wiring completely reconditioned..
Injector s changed.. coolant tmp sensor changed..Still the same
Fpr, igniter, map, distributor, tps, timing all checked.. everything good..

Could that be a faulty ecu?
Because when I checked if the injectors are opening, voltage seems to be low, as my test bulb was hardly lighting..
Forgot to tell you that once the engine starts, it misfires but when I unplug fuel pump wire it idles well..

Changed ecu today..
Started well.. revs super good..
But once I switched off..
Problem comes back again..
Help guys

a while back i know a member experienced the car cutting out and having issues starting back...weirdly it was the efi relay going bad iirc...but i think that is a long shot with your car

did you do a diagnostic?

normally misfiring is linked to the culprits you already checked

do you have any grounding issues ---- main harnesses/ecu/injectors/ignitor/fuel system??? you said the wiring was completely reconditioned
if you got any paint/harness work done on the engine bay and had the harness removed, you have to make sure everything is grounded properly on to metal and not "paint"

your voltage issue is electrical and need to be investigated further

Which wire are you talking about? Could give a clue as to what is going on.

**When I unplug the fuel pump.. it idles perfectly..no black smoke.
but once fuel pump plugged in, misfires..

today changed the distributor, starting problem solved.. but it still runs rich and misfires..

Engine revs like it is equipped with launch control when fully throttled..early boost cut.
But when revving slowly and gradually, it climb in revs better and passes 4k rpm..boost cut occurs later.

Will carry on diagnosis tomorrow.. and let you know about the fault codes..

All ground wires are good..
Tomorrow will carry on with diagnostic..

The car should stall when pump disconnected mate if voltage and ump are OK then it a pressure regulator or open injector I think

This is a funny 1

you mentioned the map sensor not making a difference if unplugged. have you tried another one?

also, is the pipe connected to the map sensor ok, no blockages or holes in the pipe? i have seen issues when the filter blocks up as the map sensor then wont see a change in manifold pressure.

also try wiggling the wiring around by the ecu once it is running and see if that makes any difference. sometimes the wires get brittle and can break inside the insulation, not that common, but can happen.

Hi im just assuming here, but maybe re-check your mechanical and distributor timing.

That can also be a cause of the miss fire and not being able to rev up.

Maybe put on a fresh set of plugs.

Also the number 1 culprit in my experience was the ignition coil, check that out, make sure its grounded well or try another coil that is on a running vehicle, if possible.
