There are a few threads dotted around on forums but i cant gain any solid answers, or easy ways to identify whether your car is or not.

Okay, I'll admit there's a lot of hearsay, I think my model guide even states a few of these unsubstantiated 'facts' as well - should probably amend those at this stage.

So the only place I've ever seen reference to the Snow Versions in print is actually in the options guide at the back of the Toyota brochures. There's a grid and one of the options available on the whole range is the 'Snow Version'. It references Hokkaido District and states that the specification will include contents specific to that area. It doesn't states exactly what these are but if I were pushed I'd go with snow tyres at the bare minimum. I've had a few Snow version GT's and they have all been packing snow tyres and yellow headlamps. Could just be a coincidence but given that Hokkaido is at the north end of the island and resembles a Russian climate, it makes a lot of sense. In fact it's the reason why we have AWD versions of most Japanese models in general, the weather is very severe.

Additionally there's a bit of evidence in the parts catalogue to support a stronger starter:

28100-10040

( 1 )12V 1.0KW,カンレイチ シヨウ OR ユキグニ シヨウ (12/1989 - 05/1994)

28100-10030

( 1 )12V 0.8KW (09/1990 - 05/1994)

The top part number shows the original starter from the mk1 and the Japanese states 'Show OR Snow' so that makes sense for a cold region.

There's no other differences in the alternator, radiator, thermostat, coolant pump, etc that I can see.

I can remember a panel that covers the radiator in cold weather to help with getting the vehicle to operating temperature though.

Would also imagine that snow chains are a requirement in Hokkaido district too.

A great insight into the reasons for the snow editions! Certainly new knowledge to me. I suppose the main way to check would be to check out the starter motor?

I got the snow version sticker on the underside of my bonnet. But comfortable that it's just a replacement bonnet after the vehicle may have been in an accident.
