Starlet EP81 -> EP82 GT Turbo conversion

Hello,

I'm new here, and have a lot of questions regarding the Starlet EP82 GT Turbo which I hope you can answer.
My quest is to build a left-hand drive Starlet GT Turbo as I live in Denmark. Denmark have very strict rules in tuning and lot of documentation is needed to get the mods authorized. I'm aiming to get all mods authorized as I don't wanna mess with the ensuarance companys.

In order for them to accept the conversion from a Starlet EP81 1,3 XLi with 75bhp to a Starlet EP82 1,3 GT Turbo you have to document :

- Technical suitablity - You have to document that the increase in bhp and topspeed can be handled by the supension and brakes. This has been documented before in a BMW 320->325 conversion where they documented that the 320 and 325 uses the exact same suspension, and that the brakes had been upgraded to the same size discs as the 325 uses. So I need to document that EP81 and EP82 bodys is the same and I used the brakes and suspension from an EP82.

- Emission requirements - The new motor must meet the same standard as the original motor, and this need documentation. This documentation can be done by either sending the car to Germany for emissiontesting (costs 1500£ per test, so this is not an option) OR find car which uses the same motor and some papers on what emissions standard it follows.

1. question. The only difference in Toyota Starlet EP80, EP81 and EP82 is motorsize (EP80 = 1.0l , EP81 = 1,3l, EP82 = 1,3l Turbo...) and luxuary equipment such as air condition, power steering etc. The body of the cars is the exact same?

2. question. Does parts for EP82 bolt directly on EP80/EP81 without any mods? then it will be easy to document that I swapped the entire suspension with the one from an EP82.

3. question. The Starlets in Denmark have to approve the Euro1 standard in emission. Since Great Brittain is also an EU country I think you have to follow the same standards, but it seems you have some special MOT tests for exhaust emission that the car has to pass quiet often? Anyone how have a link to the british standard emission standard or documentation that it follows euro1?
The euro1 standard says 2,72g CO per km I think.
Standards can be seen here : http://www.dieselnet.com/standards/eu/ld.php

Answer: The only difference I think there is with the non turbo and turbo model's body is addition of anti-roll bars/braces on the body. I would suspect there is a chance that the EP82 chassis may be stronger, slim as that may be. Over here when the 4efte engine has been put into the ep80-81 shell, there has been no issues with chassis or body weld failure. On all these conversions the ep82 bars and braces were also transfered to the ep80-81 shells, making it more rigid in those areas.

2. question. Does parts for EP82 bolt directly on EP80/EP81 without any mods? then it will be easy to document that I swapped the entire suspension with the one from an EP82.

Answer: All of the parts are a direct swap with no mods needed. The guys here just get a front cut, and the suspension components and bolt them onto the ep80-81 shell. The engine is a direct swap minus the harness and ecu.

We don't have emission testing or laws over here so I can't help with the third question.

I think the EP82 had an extra reinforcement aswell next to the sway/strutbars on the car.
I think I saq it when I was looking at the frontcut I bought:)

Thanks for the answer. The conversion itself and getting the technical suitablity for the mods approved is no problem. The biggest problem in Denmark when tuning has always been the emissions requirements since its a very expensive test, so the only way to document it is actually by comparing it to another car that already exist so bad luck if youre tuning the fastest model of a car here in Denmark.

The only thing I need to start my project is something to convince them that the 4EFTE meets the euro1 standard...
but I'll try calling the test-lab where I need to document all these mods to hear how much documentation they need. Maybe it's enough that the car has been approved in an EU country (England) and was manufactored between 1992 and 1996 where the Euro1 standard was active.

Okay. I don't think this will be a problem. The most important thing is that the brakes is upgraded.. maybe now the EP82 has anti-sway bars they might require them as well in order to approve the mods.
But the technical suitablity is the least of the problem when getting these mods approved. Emission and noise testing is the worst part.

For the car to pass the noise test, it must at max measure 3db more than the noise measurement made the 1st time the car was registered ever. Don't know if there's any records on a UK car, on how many decibels that was measured the first time it was approved for the road in 1992-1995.

It is possibly easier than you think. A standard, unmodified GT is rather quiet. Certainly not much louder than a non-turbo if indeed at all.

The emissions test in the UK for the EP82 can be seen here:

Also the front antiroll bar may just bolt straight onto the bottom of your EP81. I was pleasantly surprised when it did this on my non-turbo shell.

Structurally the two cars are very close. A few differences in the bulkhead regarding mounting points but overall it is a straight swap. If you carry the wiring looms across from the donor car it will be in essence 'Plug and Play'

Hello again,

I wondered - was the Starlet GT Turbo ever sold from new i UK, or is ALL Starlet GT's in UK import from Japan?

all starlet turbos are jap imports, everyone.

this does unfortunately kill my project of legally converting an XLi 1,3 to a Starlet GT Turbo. Only way to document that the emission of the 4EFTE meets the european emissions standards is to get it measured and it costs 1500£ per test (if you fail to attain your goal in the first test, you have to do it again). This makes the project far to expensive.

If I could refer to another car sold in europe with the same engine they would have accepted that as documentation.

But thanks for the info guys :)

Hello...

I have a model report for EP91 glanza, also with 4efte engine.
It is euro 2.
But not sure this is enough for your projekt

Actually the rules are strange. They will only accept reports stating the same euro standard and Starlet GT Turbo is 1989-1995 så it would be euro1. Even though the newer standards like euro2 are stricter and better they don't accept them.

The Danish goverment really sucks... worst country in the world to live for car enthusiast. Impossible to legally tune cars and tax on cars is 180% meaning you can multiply factory vechile price with 2,8 to get the Danish price :(
