how can you tell if the turbos knackered? theres a bit of white smoke coming out of the exhaust does that mean its cracked and needs a new one?

How do you remove the clutch cable from the top of the gearbox? trying replace the clutch at the moment and this is the only thing stopping us from taking the gearbox off. it just spins and takes the cable with it. anyone be able to help? cheers.
