Has any one on hear had problems with this?? A mate of mine has just got done for running a 1.5 because they say he is not paying enough road tax as the cut off for the tax bracket the starlet falls into is 1.4. they are taking him to court over the matter anyway saying it is fraud and tax evasion!! its like running your car on red diesel :mad:

I thought the tax cut off was 1600cc tbh on cars the age of a Starlet... The Paseo is the same to tax as a GT....

It has 5E stamped on the block for starters and it all started with a road side check and when they did that it came back as a 1.3 on the records and the engine was a 1.5 he was told there is going to be a lot more of road side checks as there is a lot of starlets getting stolen and broke up!

like the cops would know what 5e means . . . . .

Well the only way they will know its a 1.5 is to take the sump off, they not gonna do that at the roadside. Other than having 5E stamped on the block.

It just shows how little is know about it then! Every car has a chassis number and every car has an engine number and there all on the central data base the the dvla and the police use all they need to do is is use the chassis number/ engine number and it tells them all they need to know about the car and the engine!

I may be wrong but I think the limit is 1549cc for the lower tax rate and any size engine above that for the higher rate.

It looks like that is correct according the the parkers guide and other sources so he will just have to see what happens then!

But even with 5E stamped on the block, the 1.3 engine has 4E stamped, but it's not a 1400.

YEah, but most of the engine is not the exact number and just below that - Example 2L is 1998 cc

I believe as it's an old car anything under 1599 CC is taxed same as 1.3L - same as Nick said.

He, wrong -)

Cars registered before 1 March 2001 (based on engine size)
Private/light goods (TC11)
Engine size (cc)

12 months rate
6 months rate
Not over 1549
£130.00
£71.50

Over 1549
£215.00
£118.25

Looks like it's increased again, every year increases on £5......

So, as the 5E is 1497cc you are in the lower tax bracket. You could get a fine for failing to notify the change but not for tax evasion as youv`e been paying the correct tax.
