'98 Polo, Gearbox / Clutch Problem. Need Help ASAP!!

Ive a '98 Polo, 1L Petrol, belonging to my sister and clutch was going so fitted a new clutch and clutch cable.

Now having problems getting gears, can get gears when engine is off, but when engine is running and I press the clutch and go to select gear, im getting nothing. Played round with the selector, tried moving it along the sliding adjuster and tightened it back up, then I got one or two gears but no more.

I have the adjustment on the cable down to the very last, as I wasnt getting a nice pedal untill I adjusted it right down.

Hope someone can give me advise as this is my third long day at it and still getting nowhere.

Clutch plate aligned correctly?
Did you put gearbox oil back in?

was it selecting gears okay before you changed the clutch ?
iv seen a few of them polos with the pedal box cracking at the welds and not releasing the clutch
does the pedal feel okay

Defo let the adjustment off the cable a good bit as i was saying earlier as that wont be helping. Still cant think of what it is though. Probably something stupid.

them volswagons seem to give alot of problems with the gear linkages mate i helped a mate of mine put a clutch into his golf and after that he couldnt get gears turned out the linkages had snapped

Kieran, I just heard that the pedal boxes tend to give way on them alright. Anymore idea's?! Its doing my head in now.

Stuart, Im gonna have a go at taking some slack off the cable and play round with the selector too and see if I can get anywhere.

Like I said, I can get gears no problem once engine is off, but one engine is running and i try get gears, its a no no. but when I moved the selector slightly, I could get one or two gears.

Anymore idea's?!

thats exactly the same as my mates golf could get gears when car nat running the as soon as it was started he could only get 3rd 4th and 5th then for some odd reason he stopped geting al gears end up the linkages were scrap
