Before a certain year(talking Decades Ago) The plates were used on certain cars they are legal on those cars but not any other car after those years... unfortunately show plates only now. Although some people risk using them on the road, Personally I don't see the problem.

Pre 72 are allowed that style of plate, nothing after.
Im sure it goes hand in hand with the tax

Taken from Top Gear buyers guide:

"Cars registered before 1 January 1973 can use silver on black or white on black number plates. Cars registered after this date must use black on white plates at the front and black on yellow plates at the rear."

And if you check this website that makes plates, they say at the bottom:

"All plates unless specifically requested (Documentation Required) are sold as "Show Use" and or for "Off Road Use" and therefore we cannot be held responsible for illegal use of these plates on the road.."

Would be illegal as already stated, but so long as you don't take the piss with the letter spacing and sizes, you might not get any hassle (Unless the local Constabulary are anal about regulations :p).

Saw an all black Lambourghini Gallardo pass me on Sunday on the M4 heading for Bristol. Black paint, black lights, black windows, and those style plates.

I spaffed
