cloning hard drive?

My friends laptop keeps coming up with a hard disk error. I've got it working again, but want to clone her hard drive so if the current one fails she has a backup. Can you clone onto a smaller capacity hdd as long as it has enough space for the files etc or does it have to be the same size or bigger?

Also, does anyone recommend any cloning tools that work well?

Thanks

comes up with smart error 301 i think it is. done various scans and none of them do anything apart from report that same error. still runs ok at the moment.

it all depends on the amount of data, what u can do is create a disk image on a larger hdd and keep it, not really cloning, so u can restore that image at a later time, try acronis

Yeah its just some of their range get the same error.
Even if it is busted you can pick up a HDD for small enough money,or wait until the prices go back down and get them for next to nothing

I use seagate diskwizard (acronis) also, free download from seagate site, you need to have a seagate or Maxtor drive connected in the system or it wont copy for you (seagate and maxtor are same company now). It will also let you copy to a smaller partition too as long as it will all fit. (most of the time!)
