i have a wireless router downstairs near the phone line. i have ran an ethernet cable upstairs to my pc.

i want to move my xbox upstairs as well and have the ability to run both the xbox and the pc online at the same time. is this possible with the same cable with an adapter or hub or will i have to switch it around everytime i want to use either one or run another cable down to the router?

hope that makes sense :)

Any idea if your wireless router has an uplink port? If it has you should be able to run a cable from the uplink port of the router to a port-switching hub.

If the router doesn't have an uplink port or the switch doesn't have the ability to detect the devices connected to it, you might need to use a crossover cable to make the connection.

its a sky router made by sagem, not alot of info on it tbh. think it just has the normal 4 ethernet ports out the back and thats it.

can you not just get an ethernet switch? or would that not work?
think there are a few netgear ones kicking about at work i could try if you think it may work?

Should work OK. If the switch doesn't have an Auto MDI/MDIX function, then you'll probably need to use a crossover cable instead of a standard patch cable to connect it up to the router.

The FS105, FS108 and FS116 Unmanaged switches are standards based for easy integration of Ethernet (10 Mbps) and Fast Ethernet (100 Mbps) devices. These switches feature 5, 8 or 16 ports. All the ports provide automatic speed and duplex sensing, plus Auto Uplink to adjust for straight-through or crossover cables and make the right connection.

Should work fine with a normal patch cable.

these are the sort of things we have laying about that i could probably steal to try out:

can you not get a patch to crossover adapter instead of changing the complete cable if that is the case? i had to pull up a load of carpets to get the cable in nicely :(

that will work fine on a normal patch cable, as i use a 4-port netgear router into a 16port version of that switch without issue

at home i am using 2 of these

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-082-BE

one set up to be a router, the other as an access point/switch. means i have ethernet ports in the 2 important rooms plus n spec wifi transmitters at opposite ends of the house

Why not get a wireless adaptor for the xbox?

cos they're expensive, and a bit shite, would much rather connect over ethernet
