How to Install a Vacuum Boost Gauge

A turbocharger or a supercharger increases an engine's horsepower by forcing additional air into the motor. The amount of pressure the forced induction produces is referred to as boost. A boost gauge can show the driver how much boost is generated, whether too little or too much, which is handy for monitoring the health of the engine. A vacuum boost gauge is plumbed into the engine's vacuum lines. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions
1
Determine where you want to mount the boost gauge. It should be mounted where the driver can clearly see it. Possible locations include the top of the steering column, the inside of the A-pillar or the dash top. Depending on the vehicle, you may be able to mount it in one of the dash vents.

2
Fasten the vacuum line to the back of the gauge. The procedure will vary depending on the brand and style of boost gauge. Route the vacuum line through the firewall and into the engine bay. If you cannot find an existing hole to send the line through, you will have to drill a hole in the appropriate spot with a power drill.

3
Plumb the vacuum line into one of the vacuum lines on the intake manifold. Once you have located the line you want to use, cut it with shears. Install a T-fitting onto the line to reconnect it. Fasten the vacuum line from the boost gauge onto the third arm of the T-fitting. Secure the lines with hose clamps and tighten them with a screwdriver.

4
Splice a round eyelet onto the end of the black ground wire on the gauge. Install the black ground wire from the back of the gauge onto an appropriate ground in the dash. The mounting place should be metal and free of paint. Fasten the eyelet to the ground location with a screw.

5
Splice the wire for the gauge light into the existing gauge or dash lights. You can either use an inline crimper to fasten the wire to an existing wire, or you can route the wire from the gauge into the vehicle's fuse block. You will need a shop manual for your vehicle to determine which terminal to use.

6
Run the power wire from the back of the gauge to an available terminal on the fuse block. You may need to splice the power wire into the wire for another component or gauge in the car. Install the boost gauge in the mounting spot. Use double-sided tape if you want to avoid drilling any holes in the interior.
