ISP Help

Hi lads, I just moved home and my new phone line supports up to about 2.5MB dsl connection at max. However after the 10 days my connection has settled at 1MB with Pipex, its proving a bit of a problem with xbox live, getting kicked from servers, failing to connect to hosts etc, I was getting 2MB in the 10 day period and it was fine.

I see BT offer a MAX product which gives, or should give a better rate, as the dsl checker says the line supports up to 2MB o fixed line, or over 2MB with BT Max.

Is this max option any good or worth moving, or am I best just to stick with the connection I have? In the country hence the line quality, about 3km as crow flies from the exchange.

Or any other products or ISP's worth checking out?

My performance today:

What does your "NAT Status" say when you connect?
If you play Modern Warfare 2 it will tell you when you try and connect to game.

If it says "Strict" this will be your problem. If it says "open" then it will be your connection.

Yeah I have an Open NAT, and port forwarding setup for all live ports on the router. It's a nightmare, I could't even connect to a friends live party last night, and they only live about 20 miles away. Keep getting "lobby closed" etc, even when I know the lobby is still open.

where i work i deal with a lot of people in remote locations etc and in my experience changing providers doesn't help, as it's the most likely the exchange giving you the poor connection,

haven't heard of the MAX option myself though, might be worth a try if you have a cooling off period so if it doesn't work you don't have to pay the extra

Yeah, I have checked the line and there are no problems (the engineer repaired all the problems when he had installed the line as no one has lived up here for about 15 years).

The connection I use is wired, and it's a Cisco Linksys WAG190 router so fairly new and capable of a lot more.

Yeah I think I am probably out of the cooling period, and like you say I think it won't make much if any of a difference to the connection if I move ISP, just wanted to be certain.

Gonna have to wait until BT improve their infrastructure...

instead of just using speedtest, have a look at using http://www.pingtest.net/ its run by the same guys, only it offers insight into how ur isp is running ur connection :)
