MR2 gear oil change

Hi all,

Any idea what I need to put in to an MR2 gearbox? Also is there a diff in all of the GTS MR2's? if so will I need some sort of additive?

Thanks

A good 75w-90 should do the job Dylan. The optional LSD is a viscous diff, it's a sealed unit so you won't need any additives. The only difference between having a non-LSD or LSD equipped box is the amount of oil you'll need to fill it with, IIRC the non-LSD box takes slightly more than a LSD equipped box.

However if you have an aftermarket LSD, then you may well need to add something in with the oil.

Cheers Terry, wealth of information as usual! I want to do a full service on it when I am back so gonna make sure I have everything I need. To be honest its pretty stock so wouldnt think an aftermarket diff would be in there.

I will trawl on the MR2 forums for info on where to drain the gearbox oil from. Thank jebus for forums is all I have to say!

All mr2 rev3 turbo's came with a factory fitted lsd, and a lot of mr2 owners recommend redline mt-90 oil, have a look below matey. ;)

cheers for the info boss. So all MR2 turbos from rev3 on came with a factory fitted LSD?

that guide is handy, laughed at how logical the fella who wrote it is :)

"A word of caution: make sure you start this procedure with the engine cold, unless you like the feel of hot gearbox oil burning your hands.

1. Firstly, you need to make sure that you can get the transmission fill plug off before you remove the drain plug. If you remove the drain plug only to find that the fill plug won't budge you'll be stuck with an MR2 with no gearbox oil. So the fill plug comes first. "

No worries guys, glad to help :) Yes ive always been led to believe that all mr2 rev3+ cars came with a factory lsd, and ive been round mr2's for a good 4+ years and ive never heard otherwise, and yes its a good guide but you might laugh about the bottom quote but its so true. :haha:

man that guy is speaking from experience and it is exactly the type of thing I would do. Drain all the oil out then not be able to open the filler and be left standing there thinking "ahhh shit.... what now..." haha :)

Also interesting to see you have to fill it using tubing.. glad I didnt just buy the oil and go at it. These guides are handy to have.

You "dont" have to use the pipe work, ive done it without, but its a dam sight easy with the pipe, if you get stuck with anything just pm me as ive got some nice little nifty links.
