would i be best of just giving it a good clean or should i paint it?

obviously it will look the bollocks after painting it and a few months afterwards, but whats the durability of the finish like on a painted box????

also, what paint should i use? would just going over it with some silver hammerite be ok? also, would it be best to spray it on or just brush paint?

I've just finished painting my new box,and it looks minty fresh now.what I did was use a wire brush attachement for the drill, and give it a good going over, once i was happy with it,then I give it a good clean with White spirit, then applied the paint buy brush(aliuminum colour paint) this is the 3rd box I have done and it lasts well,my dad has also done the same on two of his cars and still look good

the only other way of getting a as new finish is getting the case vapour blasted, but I'm guessing that the case has to be empty for this???

Iv seen good few members using hammerite paint ( that you use to paint metel gates) Which would last up to 5 years. But this obviously wouldnt give you a show class finish but would last and be tough wouldn have to worrie about it! Hope it helps mate

I will hav to hav a look in the garage, will let you know tomoz for the exact paint we used.it's been on one of the cars nearly 2 years and still looks spot on,but it is a wkend car only and gets used in summer only

I can't imagine hammerite looking that good,as it's a thick paint??

If I get chance I will post some pics up of the painted box

Thick paint will last longer also can thin it down paint it and forget about it wouldnt worrie too much about the finish as its down the bottom and hard to see if u have fmic pipes the battery would all cover it up. Once wen its cleaned and degreased paint it up and forget about it for 5 years. Might not have the finish but duability over finish for me anyday on a part like that were its not too visible.

Same as Steveatyork said.
But if you powerwash it too often then the paint will come off.
The gearbox surface is rather smooth, the paint needs a slightly rough surface to hold on.
I painted my gearbox 7k kms ago, still holding on,just the power wash spoilt it at some places.

if its going to look a bastard with paint then i may as well just clean it and leave it at that.

the only reason to paint it would be for looks. hammerite spray comes out really nice, its just so thin, needs about a million coats to get good coverage.

It doesn't matter what paint you use if it ain't prepped prperly then it wll come off

I've never power washed my engine bay, saying that it never gets dirty as my 5 is only a summer car and do no more than 3000miles a year

did less than a 1000 miles last year :-(

The Only prob with mine is that alot of the gbox is on veiw,so it has to look right, the only parts I have used hammerite on are the block and the odd bracket as there prone to rusting and hammerite is good at holding back rust

Try appliance paint, it comes in metalic silver, bonds well and drys quick. I have my head sprayed with it and its not flaking off yet!!

If you etch primer it before painting it will stay on as long as you want.
