I know that Autoglym is very good, but if you know any other good makes please share your thoughts with me -)

I decided to try to do a proper wash both inside and outside (finally we have good weather for that). What products would you recommend? There are so many to choose from....
I found this seller on Ebay which seem to have loads of products and looks like it's cheaper than Halfaurds, also if you know any other sellers please advise -)

Also if anyone could explain the procedure - that would be highly appreciate - what to use 1st, 2nd and so on -)

Is it important to use a professional shampoo or just any will do???

Thank you!!!

It's a good one! Thank you.

I just wanted to see different opinions on this matter - as I'm sure everyone is washing their cars in a different way. So It would be great if someone could share their list of products they use for a proper car wash!

Yeah I know what you mean :)

Everyone details differently, I try to follow the below

1. Wash with cheapo truck wash

2. chammy dry

3. Mother Clay Bar and detail spray to clean the paint work to a mirror finish (feels like a smooth glass)

4. Polish whole car and buff off

5. Car needs sealing now after all your hard work, so a wax or similar ( I use a silicone free liquid polymer called Poly Bright - which most of the crash repairers use over here)

6. All wheels off and clean the arches and wheels/tyres and put it all back together

7. Brasso for exhaust

8. normal glass cleaner and newspaper for inside and out on the windows :)

Most people do the polish and never seal the paint work afterwards and wonder why there paint ends up dull after a few days........

or

My mate uses Jiff on his white car with a scotch pad LOL (dont try this at home)

Halfords are doin 3 for 2 on car cleaning so factor that in if you plan on buying a good few products.

Marco pretty much has it covered in his post there, just give yourself the time and make sure the weather is gonna stay dry. Doing all them steps properly takes a a few hours.

Step 6, use autoglym alloy wheel seal. So give them one good scrub, like taking them off as mentioned, but use this product from now after cleaning to keep them clean. I just spray on, don't bother buffing as instructions say.

As he also said, if your going to polish the car, make sure you keep time to wax it after, pointless in my eyes otherwise.

I also like using rain-x rain repellent(glass cleaner), savage stuff for glass cleaning and rain repellant, kind of a seal/wax again

Using microfibres to buff everything off

Thank you!

How about the leather? I heard a lot that leather is always better than microfibres???

Right - I made a list here - please have a look and correct/add if I missed anything

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/...productId_1002673_langId_-1_categoryId_165671

There is also this deal but it seem to cost more than all 3 on top combined -)

Rain-x

I also found this one - I suppose - this is good to have if the car hasn't been washed for some time???

I'm not big On that pack but if you have no products at all yet it kinda gives ya everything ya need, just make sure it's cost effective compared to the 3 for 2.

Step 3 from marco's post would be sufficient instead of getting the cleanser kit

Autoglym official reply -)

Dear Paul

Thank you for your enquiry

If you are after the ultimate finish then preparation is the key to achieving this. I will give you the long answer and then explain maintenance of the finish at the end.

First start with a thorough wash of the wheels using either Autoglym Clean Wheels or Autoglym Custom Wheel Cleaner. If you have ‘normal’ alloy wheels I would steer you to wards Clean Wheels, if you have chrome or another specialist finish use the Custom Wheel Cleaner. Check the back of the pack for details. You may also require Intensive Tar Remover to remove any tar spots from the wheels too.

Next wash the car with Bodywork Shampoo Conditioner, then remove any road tar from the lower half of the vehicle using Autoglym Intensive Tar Remover.

Now we move onto more paint work preparation, using the Autoglym Surface Detailing Clay Kit remove all traces of bonded contaminants from the exterior painted surfaces. Unless your car is brand new it will have accumulated quite a lot of contamination that bonds to the paint and can’t just be washed away with the shampoo. The clay safely removes these from the paint leaving a perfectly smooth surface. If you rub your fingers over the car after washing and then again after claying you will notice a huge difference. You will also be able to see the contamination being transferred from the paint to the clay which will turn from white to a brown. Very full and comprehensive instructions are on the back of the pack.

Following claying you can now decide whether you want to fully remove all previously applied polishes, coatings, waxes etc from the paintwork. This is a good idea as by applying new polish and wax to completely bare paint will give you increased durability as you aren’t applying it over a decaying layer. To do this use Autoglym High Definition Cleanser as directed. This is a simple rub on rub off product that also further deep cleans the paint allowing for a more even application of subsequent products. This step can be omitted though as you see fit.

Following this we move onto polishing with Super Resin Polish. This will remove any hazing or fine scratches and impart a glossy finish to the surface. If there are marks still present following a firm application of the polish to the area then apply Autoglym Paint Renovator to the area as directed. After using Paint Renovator re polish over the area with Super Resin.

After this we move onto the final step of sealing and protecting your now fully cleaned, prepared and polished paintwork. For the ultimate finish apply Autoglym High Definition Wax as thinly and as evenly as possible to all of the exterior painted surfaces allow to dry (about 15 mins depending on the weather) and then buff off using the specially selected microfibre included. This will not only increase the gloss and depth of shine but now acts as a barrier to new dirt and contaminants and a sacrificial layer that will offer real protection for up to 6 months. Dirt and contaminants find it harder to stick to a waxed surface so washing and cleaning becomes even easier. You can also polish and wax your alloy wheels that will make it harder for brake dust to stick to them .

So now your car is fully prepared and looking fantastic the only thing to do now is maintain the finish. Little and often is the key here, wash with the shampoo weekly or fortnightly is all that is generally required, keep this up for 4 – 6 months (depending on the weather conditions and the number of miles you cover) until the beading of the wax starts to fail, or an improvement in appearance is desired. Then simply repeat the process above, leaving out steps that you don’t need. You don’t need to clay or use the HD Cleanser any more than twice a year, although if you want you can re polish and re wax as you like. If you carry out the paint preparation, polishing and sealing and then wash regularly you should only need 2 – 3 ‘big’ sessions a year.

Kindest Regards

Can't really add too much to the wealth of info above but I'd certainly recommend the Autoglym range. Most of my stuff is Autoglym and it always provides quality results. For example we attacked Blaine's moss covered GT a few months back:

http://www.toyotagtturbo.com/forums/showthread.php?107577-Slimer-GT

Quick rundown:

- A three-man sponge bath using the Autoglym bodywork shampoo conditioner

- Clay bar session using Bilt-Hamber clay and Dodo Juice lube.

- Initial polish with Autoglym colour restorer

- Secondary polish with Autoglym Super Resin Polish

- We had to hit it again with the SRP as the paintwork was quite dull but so long as yours hasn't lay in a field for a year you'll be fine.

- Waxed with Autoglym HD wax

- Stood back in awe and smiled

bilt hamber products are very good

http://www.bilthamber.com/

i use,

ordinary cheap wash and wax
clay bar (bilt hamber normal and just water spray)
autoglym high resin polish
auto glym high def wax

i cant stress how good the autoglym high def wax is, it takes an age to put on, but my god is it worth it

although bilt hamber do a kit that has won plenty of awards from auto express, and will be ideal as a starter kit so your not wasting money http://www.bilthamber.com/wax-and-polishes/auto-express-kit
