Replacing the PCV Valve *

I changed mine today so I thought I'd put up a short little guide on how to do it as its a job thats pretty easy to do.

The PCV Valve is an emissions control valve on the top of the crackcase that Toyota recommened you changed after every 50,000 miles.

PARTS: PCV Valve & Grommet
You can get these from Toyota or order from Camskill (http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php?plid=m19b0s1296p13036) who also get there ones from Toyota and are OEM replaecments.

First of all you need to know where it is:

If your running a top mount the valve is hidden from view under the intercooler. So, the first thing to do is take that off.

You will have to remove the intake pipe from the turbo off to remove the intercooler. It's two bolts on the Intake pipe and four bolts on the intercooler as well as the smaller earth bolt.

With all that gone you should be starring at this:

You can see the PCV Valve now as its situated between the third and fourth ignition leads:

Removing the old Valve

If yours was like mine and not been replaced for a while it will be a little dirty on first inspection. They are only pushed into the crankcase and not screwed in so the first thing to do is remove the pipe that’s goes into the inlet.

It's only two clips and should make it easier to remove the valve. Before you do take a little moment to cover up the open intake to the turbo and manifold:

I just used two towels to cover them up, the reason being when you remove the valve it can shatter and you don’t want bits going into those holes. If you’re lucky you may well just be able to pull the valve out of the hole without it shattering but if its a little crispy, it may break like mine did.

Use a flat bed screwdriver to get in at the edges of the grommet and prise the item away from case. If any bits break off make sure you pick them out of the hole before you apply the new valve.

Once the old valve is removed you can clean up the top surface if it’s a little dirty like mine. Ready the new valve, just rub some wd40 around the edges to moist it up a little and push the new grommet into the case.

Pop the intake pipe back on the valve and put that back into the inlet manifold first then push the new valve into the grommet, it may take a firm push but be careful not to damage the new valve.

You should have something that looks like this now:

Your old valve may not be in the same condition:

Thats it! All you have left to do is put the top mount back on and make sure the intake pipe is on nice and tight to ensure no leaks in the system.
