USB Hub PSU

I have a USB 2.0 hub which struggles to work properly without a PSU but has a socket for a universal one.

Can anyone advise what type of mains adapter I need? I'm guessing 5v, but what about the mA?

It's unbranded, one of them 50p Hong Kong jobbys from ebay.

lol @ 50p Hong Kong Hub.

Do you know what type of USB ports are on your motherboard?? If its an old system it could have USB 1.0 which wont have enough power to power the Hub.
If not then you will need to buy a PSU, would agree with Gryzor 500mA should be enough, have you got a picture of it?

they usually run on 5v 500ma or thereabouts.

Cheers for the advice guys. My laptop is only a year old, USB 2.0, but still struggles to power the hub.

I'm in two minds now. I lost a load of stuff on a hk hdd caddy after the plug was knocked loose, Slightly worried the mix of cheap electronics and mains power could be nasty. So maybe A decent universal psu would protect against that, but maybe just getting a complete powered hub would be safer. But then all the ones I've seen in the UK are an annoying shape, this one fits perfectly in a slot in my laptop table. Decisions decisions...
