Hey - I have a new laptop with windows 7 on it and it has a product key on the bottom, now the laptop never came with a CD to install windows 7 if a format was needed. so is there a way to download windows 7 and use my product key?

Thanks,

Rich

Hi Rich,

most laptops these days do not come with installation disks. A lot fo them have a restore feature to allow you bring the machine back to how it came out of the box but this is dependent on manufacturer.

My laptop with windows 7 keeps asking me to create a restore disk so I better check out if that is required.

My advice to you would be check with your laptop supplier and see what there restore process is :)

Cheers Dylan, will have a look in to it (Don't usually use laptops!) So I'd have to restore, rather than format if I get an issue?

Cheers!

depends on what the manufacturer has set it up for. Back as far as 1997 Dell used to put a hidden partition on the drive containing a full snapshot of the drive when it left the factory.

To get a fresh install you simply ran a command and booommm it was exactly as it came out of the box.

Other manufacturers do it in a similar way but you would be best of checking with them :)

there is usually a partition dedicated for factory restore, there is a function key for that feature upon boot time, there are alot of application now out there that allows u to create restore disc, several discs to be exact for your laptop u have to check the manufacturer for the function if its available

When I was in need of Windows Media centre for my PC I downloaded the software through the internet (PM me for site) and used my computers product key which was on the side of the tower. Now that product key only works on whatever it was on originally, for example WMC for WMC product key. Service packs don't make a slight difference to key usage.

I'v heard windows 7 is rubbish and not worth getting, for simple people im told...

Well I would advise trying it yourself. I skipped Vista and held on to XP but the machine I bought recently didnt come with XP and I am delighted it didnt :) Windows 7 is very good I have to admit. The laptop I am using has been rebooted 3 times since I got it a couple of months ago and they were all reboots due to air travel. It is rock solid and has not given me one ounce of trouble. Any of the old software I decided to install went on without any issue and thats on to the 64bit version.

I would recommend plenty of RAM though but its cheap these days anyway so no excuse for not having plenty of it.

If you want to make a back so you can restore id advise Paragon

Works great with Win7 and never let me down.
And why would you need to reinstall?to fix problems via the repair console?
If so press F8 during start up,then you can boot into the Repair Console that also comeso n the Win7 disc.

One thing that annoys me is the way they dont supply the installation disc with new pc's anymore,i mean you paid for it after all.

as Dylan said, most laptops don't come with the CD's anymore.

the usual way to access the recovery partition is to keep pressing F8 when booting and choose repair your computer.

from there you should see a way to recover to factory settings. usually the last option after the default windows recovery options :)

failing that it's usually an F key before windows boots, look for a prompt when the manufacturers logo displays.

Have a scan through the stuff that came with your laptop or go to the manufacturers website and see if you can find a support application for creating a restore disc. Normally you would be supplied with an application and instructions for creating a restore disc in the event of a terminal hard drive failure.

Some suppliers will charge a fiver or more for the diagnostics/repair disks. There are utility partitions installed on some systems but this doesn't usually include the operating system.
