Anyone have any info/advice/build threads/blogs or articles on Hillclimb Eps?

ive been put off using the starlet on the road just now due to costs, mainly insurance.

but im looking into running the car at some local hillclimb events where a few friends race.

Any info or questions welcome.

Fire Gord R a pm, he uses his Glanza for hillclimb, although I think he has problems due to class regulations as to what he can actually do with the car, making it not very competitive.

Cheers Adam, have already spoke to Gord in the past but would certainly be interested in his experiences in here.

Not sure how close the regulations are but maybe Rory or Azerty might be able to input a little as they have done sprints.
I think the best thing to do would be to join a local club that offers hillclimb events as I'm sure they have their own class regulations, then you have the standard MSA regs to follow as well.

true true,

im really wondering more about setup, gear ratios on a starlet cant be good on a tight hill climb nor the lag of a big turbo :(

is NOS allowed i wonder?

I'm sure a few years ago my tuner did a number of hillclimbs in his Starlet. I'll chase him up and find out.

aye find out what turbo he ran if you can.

would be interesting to see if anything has been proven to take a 4e up a hill quicker than a ct9!

Ok, he was running a ct9 with his cousin getting first in class and him second on the same day at Werrington. The following day he won Dunkerswell sprint twice.

Class A3, in with Vag 20v turbo's, Golf's, A3's, Mk1 and 2 Escorts, Honda type r's etc etc.

Gear ratio's you want the glanza c56 box, a TRD final drive would be ace if you could get hold of one although it would be at some expense.
Gord ran a k26 but I think he found it too laggy. You may want to look into the race tech hybrid ct9, although I don't think much testing has been posted yet.

I doubt NOS use would be allowed, but that might be something that is specific to certain club regs.

surely it will cost alot more than a years insurance to do a few hillclimb events in a starlet? They aren't exactly the most expensive cars to run :/

I used mine for a couple of years at the sprints, and fecking loved it.
I run the usual TD04 and was never caught out with lag, keep it on the boil and your fine :)

As for costs, take the money out of your mind, any kind of motorsport is expensive. Entry fee's, fuel, tyres, pads, saftey equipment etc etc it all mounts up.

Im sure being in N to the I your events will be MSA sanctioned, so no NOS allowed.

If you have any more Q's just ask :)

Hmm, i dont know its just something to work towards i guess.

Moneywise it would remove insurance/tx/mot (potentially 1k+) but like you say add some other costs like entry fees pads etc. But a few friends that do it have spare safety stuff about them.

Fuel doesnt really come into it as i'll the trailering the car there and back and compared to the usuage on the road is nothing.

Well Rory this sounds bang on what im thinking, nothing bigger than td04, a whack of boost and triple8s on the front.

ive got a td04 some second hand triple8s i just need an ecu and a LSD!

please tell me you've some footage of your car?

Aye I run 1.4bar at all times, unless it was heavy rain then down to a bar or so.
I'd run R888 all round or you will unsettle the car having odd tyres on there.

Yeah I've footage on my gopro but takes an age with my tinter net connection! Will try upload some soon

Ted looked into it for our track car, quickly became a non starter. Flame proof suit, FIA approved helmet, gloves, full cage, safety cut off switches for battery and fuel, race licence. Was going to triple our car costs lol.

Aye the initial outlay is the biggest expense, but there after its regular maintenence and entry fee's really if your in a fairly reliable road car..

Hmm in the road going class a roll cage isn't needed apparently. But yeah flame proof suit and gloves needed. And apparently a sticker at your ignition with an arrow to off covers the killswitch reg.

The helmet mind you could well be a kick in the teeth, expensive for something approved.

Correct Phil. No cage needed if its competing in a road legal manner.
There are cheap crash hats out there which are snell approved, but how cheap do you value your coupon?

If its non road legal then yeah you need a cage and a cutoff switch and a log book.
You will need everything else though, even if its your road car.

For cheap racewear thats approved see here,

The Starlet is a pretty cabable little car at these type of events. I double entered Rorys one last year.
