Laptop/Tablet IN-CAR instead of gauges.

Guys if you have say emanage ultimate or a standalone ecu, you can have all that you would ever need information wise right there on a screen via the ecu software.

my question is simple, whats the best way of displaying this in car?

i dont fancy having 2 or 3 gauges in the car if i could mount one tablet with live digital data from the ECU on it.

any experience or suggestions appreciated, i know i can use my netbook(mini laptop) as it has windows xp on it and therefore definitely runs you average software programs. but is there tablets out there that you can simple use as a touchscreen laptop? i.e download software and run it like you would on a normal computor.

man i feel so old not knowing how to work these new tablet app things.:haha::haha::haha:

i bough a cheap ebay screen to try this exact setup with the emanage, however the screen quality was so crap i didnt bother... ideally you need ti build a carputer to get it working well or buy a cheap windows xp netbook and take it apart to mount the screen
(this was my next option using a wireless keyboard but i havnt got round to it yet, only on my daily driver VR4 though as its a bit more luxery than my GT or Eunos lol)

better yet, if you have an obd2 ported car its very easy to get a smartphone/tablet to read the outputs of an ecu

old cars like would be more complicated unless the ecu has an output for an app

edit as i just reread your post lol.... you can get a screen overlay to make a netbook touch screen if that helps? but not many tablets (android or apple crap) will support full veichile software, would need a windows based tablet

This is the issue, i have a spare netbook that i will start of by using (samsung NC10) but finished product i would like something like a windows based tablet to mount (ie with no keyboard) and just run the software on that.

just by the time i buy a few gauges and piller pods, the car will be a)cluttered b)owing me money.

whereas a tidy item which can i can show a gauge of anything, or switch maps turn off LC or whatever would be sweet. and probably only cost £200 all in.
not to mention i can connect it to my phone wifi and check the footy scores lol

I would have thought you could get a touchscreen to connect to a laptop/netbook? stick the laptop under your seat and then the mounted touchscreen does the rest!?
bit of a faf as you would have to load windows every time you got in the car.

a touchscreen headunit may be another way to go? don't know if they do anything as such, but a bit of skill and google searching may give you some info!

Yeah this is putting me off the netbook/laptop idea, i would want it to be a tablet, i.e. bump the button and its on.

as the youtube video shows above an andriod tablet can be used to display gauges on the tablet or as in the video a hud with polarized sticker on the windscreen. In the case above its using a bluetooth link to the odbii.

Another option is to us plx sensors daisy chained and their usb laptop adaptor to log data to a tablet.

OBD2 port though Richy, would be grand in my BMW with a LInq or torque Apps but in the GT?

explain more, i know you have info up your sleevees gryzor.

PS i already have a ECU and its software running my laptop grand, and its all i really need.

Would a pop out dvd/tv/ radio not do something Like that. Somthing with a USB display input then that would be tidier seeing it would only take a din slot and no cutting would be necessary. Just a thought.
Edit forget about that lol just realised software etc would be required doh!

nice idea no doubt though as like you say it would be DIN slot compatible. i suppose i have though much about mounting it but im sure i could sort something with some lateral thinking.

plx offer a bluetooth and wired windows, iOS and android gauge options

I'd just go for a cheap android tablet for displaying the gauge output etc. and run a laptop if your tweaking your maps.. there's nothing worse than trying to change a spreadsheet with a touch screen

If you want to use a windows laptop you could use something like vnc to display the screen on an android tablet wirelessly ... and just leave the laptop under the seat as Duncan mentioned earilier...

The bad thing about a laptop is u would need an inverter fitted to keep power to it, if u reflash maps on a low battery u can easely corrupt your maps and fuck all up.

the e01 while allow you to view/edit your emanage maps but if you are wanting to view a number of gauge like displays at once you are out of luck..

you can get car charagers for most laptops so no need for an invertor though they can tend to run hot on occasion.

Not sure if its any use but there is an app called "Torque" which is able to display certain parameters.

The other option would be something like the new Motec screen or the Toucan screen. You'll need a standalone though.

ive seen the torque app looks great but similar to other options think i runs of OBD2 port.

about the other options, i will be standalone but do those screens need a particular unit or any standalone do?
