Gearbox synchros?

Currently have my gearbox at the rebuilder and he said the synchros aren't that easy to get hold of anymore so is going to take a little longer than expected.

I know you can get genuine still via IDworkz, but it doesn't look like they do them all? 3rd gear, which is the main issue doesn't seem to be listed?

I was just wondering if there are any other options out there for synchros?

Thanks

just generally talking off memory as i had planned to undertake a gearbox rebuild a few years ago.
its fairly challenging and costly to get all the parts together for the rebuild, plus the labor charges on to that.
i acquired a few genuine toyota syncros along the way, but then realized 3rd gear was proving very difficult to obtain, i believe it was due to being discontinued---someone can correct me if i'm wrong
there were reportedly even differences between the ep91 and ep82 gearbox syncros-----my car was an automatic converted to manual, so this made my dilemma even worse, as i had no idea which gearbox was in my car (ep82 or ep91)

i then looked to ebay/internet to try to source non-genuine C52 and C56 rebuild kits, but wasn't sure if they would work back exactly in our ep82/91 gearboxes, as there was no guarantee all c52 and c56 gearboxes across the Toyota range had the same internals... in the end i got lucky and found a very good condition ep91 gearbox at the breakers (pure chance), so i bought that and gave up on the other rebuild project

What other models boxes fit ? I had a gt-four box and a fwd g5 celica box a while back, something about swapping the bell housings over ‍♂️

Problem nowadays is that pretty much any second hand gearbox I get is going to be at least 20 years old and if it's not knackered, it won't be far off!!!

I have 3 spare boxes, but they all have some sort of issue!

I got one rebuilt a good few years back and it wasn't that costly and they bloke could easily get the parts. Shame bits are so hard to find now :(

I thought the synchros where still available from Toyota ? Unless Phil has destroyed the worlds stock of 3rd,s lol
Gearbags weren't Toyotas strong point tho, I broke a diff clean in 2 and munched 2,3,4 to death in my g5 GT celica chewed shaft ends the lot

I can confirm that synchros indeed varies in size.
I was working on C56 for 4AGE.
The best bet will be is to get an import box that came of a stock engine.
The synchros just suck on these gearboxes. We need to make a plan for Honda gearbox!

if you are lucky and hunt around for a bit, you may still be able to find a relatively low mileage gearbox out of japan despite the age of these cars---just maybe

I'm not going that route. I have bought multiple "good" boxes before and they have all been shite.

Looking at the Toyota epc, 1st and 2nd seem to be the same part number and so do 3rd and 4th?

The gearbox rebuilder called me yesterday and said he was struggling. I've done some searching and if those synchros are in fact the same, then I Think you can still get them.

I've also found a few sources in America of C52 gearbox rebuild kits, so that may work too.

I will let everyone know how I get on........

Update:

Gearbox rebuilder inspected synchros and said they seem to be very slightly different, but thinks 1st & 2nd and 3rd & 4th are close enough to be interchangeable.

I called Toyota to check part numbers and the numbers I got off the Toyota epc for my age car/box have been superseded. Oddly, these new numbers don't match the IDworkz part numbers.
I spoke to IDworkz and they said they should fit but couldn't comment on using 1st gear for 2nd and 4th gear for 3rd.
At the end of the day I don't have much option other than to try it as 3rd and 2nd are discontinued. Annoying as these are the ones that mostly wear out on these boxes!

I have ordered what I could from IDworkz so will let you know how i get on. May help some of you out if you need to rebuild a box.
It's cost me nearly £200 just for the synchros, so it's not going to be cheap!!!!!

Will do.

So many knackered boxes out there that the only options will be a rebuild and like you said, options seem limited.

Once I get this done I will investigate the stuff from the USA as that would give the community a few more options.

I'm glad I got my first starlets gearbox synchros changed 10+ years ago now. That was a far cheaper job back then though!

that's some positive news dac69er.
by any chance could you give us the part numbers for the synchros you have and what gear they are for?..or take some pics of the packages with the part numbers on them
as well as the part numbers for the ones you need, but didn't get and what gear they are for?

i'll dig up in my old stock and see if i can find any of the synchros i bought a long time ago, as we never used them.... see what's what.

thanks

these are the numbers i got from the Toyota EPC using my cars model number:

1st and 2nd gear: 33367-12031

3rd and 4th gear: 33368-12020

5th gear: 33369-12020

i called Toyota to see if these numbers had been superseded and was told these are the new numbers (33368-12020 hasnt changed):

33367-12031 -> 33367-12110

33369-12020 -> 33369-12030

these are different (other than 5th) to the numbers on ID-Workz. they also don't say that 2nd are 3rd are interchangeable with 1st and 4th respectively?:

1st: 33367-12070

4th: 33368-12060

5th: 33369-12030

my only thoughts are that the numbers i got from Toyota have been superseded more than once, with the final numbers being what ID-Workz now sell?
once i have the synchros to hand i can have a proper look with the gearbox rebuilder to see what we can do.

these are the synchros i have in my possession:
33367-12070
33368-12060 (the original label had 33368-12050, but someone at the dealer turned the "5" into a "6" with a marker, maybe mislabeled originally)
33368-12082
33367-12100
33367-12101
33369-12030

i can't remember what was for what, as i bought all these items not knowing whether i had a gt or glanza box in my automatic to manual conversion ep91...so i had to be as prepared as possible for any eventuality...lol

They must have cost you a small fortune!!!

A couple of those numbers match what I found. I guess the other numbers may be for the glanza c56 box Perhaps?

Hopefully I will get the bits from IDworkz soon and I can see if it will work???

i can't remember what they cost, as it was so long ago...lol..i even have some bearings in the bag, must be for the gearbox as well

yeah, you can keep us posted on the rebuild

UPDATE:

received the synchros from ID-Workz today.
took them to the gearbox rebuilder and he was confident that they will fit as suggested (use 1st gear synchro for 2nd and 4th gear synchro for 3rd).

should have the box done by the end of next week, so fingers crossed..........
