rattling noise on timing side and oil light has come on

I was driving home yesterday and the the car started making a rattling noise on the timing side and the oil light came on.
Luckily this happened just as i got home. I checked the oil level this morning and its fine. I will be getting the car towed to a workshop tonight.
Any suggestions as to what i need to be looking at? I am assuming the oil pressure has dropped and may be related to the oil pickup seal or the pressure relief valve may have come loose.

Oil pump impeller would be my 1st thought,
Also seen a case on Ians glanza heading down to Jay's for a fuel run rattling like mad, turned out to be the dipstick tube was loose.
If the oil light came on and level is fine that makes me think pressure

is it common for the oil pump impeller to fail? I have never heard of this happening on our cars

Haven't seen a oil pump impeller fail myself.

You're already on the right track, whilst oil pressure is usually an external leak you should check the oil strainer, pressure relief valve and oil filter for blockages.

Whilst you're there drain the oil into a clean container and check for any metal filings. Best to know about any damage early on!

Oil pump pully has sheared off somehow, no metal bits or filings in the oil thank god, new oil pump and timing kit has been ordered, should be back on the road very soon

Easy fix at least Bud :)
Is the pump seized or hard to turn ? I'm thinking it somehow jammed and the belt took it out looking at them pics, nothing surprises me with old turbo Toyotas lol

The pump spins freely

[ Intelligence: 3 / 10 ] Wow Did you double Pump that Spinny thing?

i would imagine the metal got ate just enough, where it continued to eat at the spinny boi. thus almost destroying things

when you reassemble,,,i'd suggest you do a quick oil and filter change after starting the car...just in case any metal bits got into the engine and oil passage ways...you mentioned you didn't find any metal when you checked the old oil,...but my suggestion is just a precautionary measure

Quick update....The car is fixed and running sweet, however i still wanted to find out why this happened, looks like the timing belt i was using had shrunk slightly and this made it to tight putting too much force on the oil pump cog i will never use a power enterprise timing belt again.
