The great 5E v 4E timing debate.

As you may have seen I've posted up my RR chart for today, the cars a 5E which is timed up on the 4E markings and made very poor power. I'm opening her up tomorrow to double check I have it all correctly lined up.

Who all is running a 5E and which markings have u timed up your cams on?

Why are the 4E marks supposidly better than the 5E markings and surely with the longer timing belt of the 5E, even when you have it on the 4E markings it wouldn't actually be opening the valves at the same time as a 4E with a shorter belt?

my car is a 5E build
set at the 5E marks, but as side not i would like to point out, my mapper said he had to give much prespark(could also be because the slight higher CR).

What sort of power/torque at what boost are u making?

By prespark to u mean retarded ignition timing?

with a 5e bottom end, i would use 5e marks becasue of the longer stroke, i think so but i could be wrong!

Thats what I would be thinking, she's going onto the 5E marks tomorrow for a test.

dont know spuddy will it start with the cams at the 5e marks as your useing the 4efte ecu?might drop up to you tomorrow :)

We always use the 4e marks, Rick's car made less power on the 5e marks and so did Azeb's I believe

ive been always been told when doing the 5e build put the cams on the 4e mark:confused:

worth a try i guess mate! wat cams u running?

Running Speedvisions 265 cams.

I was always told to use the 4E marks also, I might having some timing out a tooth or something, will check it over before I change anything. I remember the Dizzy cap needed to be turned right far back in the retard direction to get it to 10degress advance.

Aye Billy call up anytime, just ring me or send a text to let me know if ur callin up.

Am I right in thinking everything has to go to the 4E marks, the cams and the cam pulley?

spuddy at what rpm are you at full boost with the turbo

Hopefully thats all it is. Would 1 tooth cause that much of a power loss?

yes it can you can lose top end power, that car should be going over 300 bhp easy mybe with such low comp you might need a better turbo, when i had a tdo5 on my 5e it was pulling like a train at 3500 rpms

Full boost is at 5000rpm, but when you change from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd and its still above 5000rpm theres still a sort of lag even though the revs are high, hard to explain.

ya thats alot of lag mybe we should wack my tdo5 on it just to see if theres any differance ,could it be the comp is very low for your turbo:confused:

Same thing here. When i did the first conversion years ago, i used the 5E marks, but the car wouldn't even idle properly. I had to put it back to the 4E mark. What I've learned is that if you have the stock CR of the 5E then its best to leave it the cam gear on 5E. This is why people who turbocharge their 5E dont have problems. However, if you change to the 4E pistons then that's the mark to use.
