hiya all :)

as most already know i have been having a problem with my steering wheel vibrating and after a very long list of suggestions came up the last thing to check was engine mounts.

last night i took my car to a garage and they have said my engine mounts are fine and steve came down in his mark 2 and he has more movement in his engine than i do.

Now everything on the car has been changed and is brand new from the mot in may from suspension, to track rods, steering rack+colum, bearings, brakes everything as the car had ALOT of failures (had a pre mot check) so i can not think what it can be.

recently had tracking and balancing done, changed wheels with a friend and still the same. my car is on 14s and has new tyres and when my mate used my wheels on his car there was no vibration.

it does not get worse if the car goes quicker and starts vinrating from the moment i start her yet other days i drive her and she only vibrates at idle and no vibration when driving.

the car drives straight and does not pull or drift to 1 side its just a vibration through the wheel no vibration through dash board or gear box or anything.

i really dont know what else it can be  and im going from garage to garage and nothing is working.

if anyone has any suggestions me+oky (my starbo :) ) would be so greatful.

Thanks all

Well... Looks like you've checked all the primary causes and you say it's purely the steering wheel that is vibrating, so has the bolt holding the steering wheel come lose?

Only thing I can think of right now...

Try something out, you know the handle that adjusts the steering wheel height? Push that all the way down and see if it does it then. It does it on mine but only when its in the locked position on idle. It sounds pretty normal to me unless it is vibrating a lot.

have you fitted a lower arm bar?

is there anything touching the exhaust? that would be vibrating at idle?

hope you get it sorted

il check that tonight. the vibration is quite bad and i got to hold the wheel tight.

how could i check the steering wheel bolt??

is that easy to do??

If it's a stock wheel, their will be 2 screws on the lower side of the steering wheel (under the horn IIRC). These allow the horn cover to be removed. Then down the centre of the wheel there will be large bolt (You'll need an extension bar on a socket - This should be really tight).

If it is vibrating on steady and idle then it is nothing related to what you change like brakes ,suspension ,wheels, track rods etc.
If you hold it to higher rpm when steady what is doing?is the vibration there? more or less?Any changes?

right, i tried to take a video but the vibration weren't clear. what i realised tonight was that the vibration ain't too bad up to about 55mph but gets a little worse after that+stays the same. it is as if im constantly driving over a cattle grid if that helps. just don't know wot to do :-(

right this is mega strange. just to confirm do you know af any previous accident damage. my 1st starlet had trd coilys and previous accident damage and the steering was scary as it just steered itself. had a thought though if its at idle it has to be in the engine bay area. take the fan belts off and start the car if the vibration goes away then its in the that area. possibly a bent pulley. obviously check when the crank pulley is turning that its not buckled in anyway. also just because the other engine had more movement it doesnt mean that your engine mounts arent knackered. some engines move more than others. i would also check if all the engine mounts are properly secured and bolts and nuts are tight. maybe even find the metal insert in the centre of the bush has come adrift and is rattling like hell because of the engine movement. hope you have some luck with it and keep us posted :)

bearings can make a noise but iv had both scenarios on my gt's found movement in my front bearings but ni noise and found noisy bearings but no movement. it can happen either way

tbh im thinking they might be taking you for a ride. as theyve replaced alot of parts and still found nothing. only should you replace them if there is something genuinely wrong with the part. id start asking questions as it wont be cheap for what you have replaced.
