FMIC comparisons - King thread

To those people with bar and plate intercoolers, these are the worst type of intercoolers. Tube and fin is better.

You actually get air flowing throught a tube and fin, whereby the air will smack the bar and plate intercooler and rebound back, or up and down, sideways. Waste of time really. So yeah, no matter how large or shiney your bar and plate is, it will always be inferior in performance gain.

do you have a concrete proof to prove this?

Its pretty much obvious when you picture it. Something round will always flow throught air better than something square and flat.

Picture the tube as a nose cone. Air hits the nose cone and goes throught the intercooler cooling fins. But when you have a bar and plate IC, air hits the flat wall and goes nowhere. The only air going throught the IC is justg the air going past the fins. Look, im not making this up, this is already proven in the inductry, just go ask any intercooler person and they will say the same that tube and fin is better.

Its all to do how air goes past the IC. I have a tube and fin IC and i will never touch a bar and plate IC even if its gold plated.

@iamlegend: your core looks great but you've had to remove your crashbar.. which is a -ve in my books.. :)

I have a FMIC as above (blitz copy) of the ebay - toyo sports! The cheapest KIT I could find, and so much better than a standard TOP mount you would not believe it. It can be fitted with the crashbar in place but will seat LOW. OR the crashbar can be modified or used another crash bar - not standard (may be even better steel?). It is possible to fit all that lot with the AC and with the crashbar!

The piping on the hot side is different - looks like an HDI piping to me! A lot better and shorter route!

P.S. Look at the picture above and notice the horn on the right side and the horn on the left side -)

horn relocation

@Paul_JJ: i noticed the horn on the left side (of the picture) and thought to myself - awesome! i should try that too.. only thing is, i am running no radiator grille atm and so my candy-painted horn looks nice in red.. :D

Great thread guy, i ordered my hdi fmic about a week ago, had to go with this intercooler just due to the development that went into then and price. Also there seems to get very good rep overall. Cant wait for it to arrive :)

I had 3 horns on mine -)))))))) don't know why! but they're all different frequency! I think the one next to the headlight is the standard one.

Disagree here, "exactly" same design would be wrong. Piping may go the same route have a similar size of appearence but thats it.

Heres a photo of my BLITZ FMIC when i fitted it 4 years ago:

what jay said about it and theres pictures to show you ;)

""Couldn't help but think I'd seen it somewhere before then I compared it to a later spec Blitz kit which I had lying about. Check it out: ""

looks identical to me.....

Ive seen this thread since it was started, you must not have read the first page yourself going by your reply.

Blitz used mild steel which which helped to cool air flow where Autobhan used cheap aluminium which didnt. If you had read my above post i said they have a similar appearance, rest is far from the same.

Rest my case.

new to the forum

hello mate
wherecan i get the greddy FMIC been looking for ages does it require alot of frontal work

thanks daniel

Here's my input on this... I've had both the GReddy and Blitz LM intercoolers. Here's a pic comparison

As you can see, the Blitz core absolutely dwarfs the GReddy one, nearly twice the size, but i can't really see the point of having such a large core on a starlet no matter what power your running. Especially having to remove the crash bar. I think the GReddy core is large enough for all applications. Piping on the Blitz is really long too and the outlet on the turbo pipe to the bov is too small so you get alot of chatter and renders the bov pretty much useless, like running no bov. The GReddy kit also looks alot more better made with bracings on the piping ( Although my bracing have broken off but still ok).

Out of the JDM coolers, I would recommend the GReddy.
