JDM Vin Decoder.

Hi Jay,
I had my Starlet GT Advance at a car meet recently the first time I had it at a meeting like that in years. This guy told me he had one but it had no electric windows, no a/c , no central locking , no clock on the dashboard and an LSD. My car has all these minus the LSD. One of the lads slagged me of saying my car was a fake. I tried to look up JDM VIN decoders just to satisfy my curiosity it’s not giving me specifics just model GT and specifying if it’s an advance. Could you look that up for me please ? The VIN is EP82-(REMOVED). I appreciate your help thanks Eoin.

I think you're just the victim of rumours Eoin.

The Advance is based on a black GT shell so will come up as a 205 metallic black EP82 GT on the Toyota EPC which yours does:

Market
Japan
Year
01/1995
Make
TOYOTA
Model
STARLET
Frame
EP82

Vehicle characteristics
GRADE:GT:GT TYPE
DESTINATION:JPN:JAPAN
ENGINE:4EFTE:1300CC 16-TURBO DOHC EFI TURBO
FUEL SYSTEM:TBO:TURBO SYSTEM
TRANSMISSION:MTM:MANUAL TRANSMISSION
GEAR SHIFT TYPE:5F:MTM, 5-SPEED FLOOR SHIFT
NO.OF DOORS:3D:3-DOOR
COLOR CODE:205
TRIM CODE:

They were only made between December 1994 and March 1995 (which yours is) and one of the main features of the Advance model was that they ALL had the electric windows and central locking.

ABS, LSD, Recaros, etc, etc were all available factory options but they had to have the electric windows which means your friend's GT wasn't an Advance.. The clock delete was a Glanza thing so also inaccurate. I don't bother with car shows as I usually end up listening to quite a lot of this stuff.

If the decals (front and rear) are genuine and original then she's a genuine Advance. Looks like a cracker too!

Just a question, how many EP-82 Turbos are left on the roads here ? I will have my one 19 years on the 7th of July. It’s just a toy I do very little mileage in it now I did drive it to work from 2001 to 2008 but stopped that after I bought my Lexus IS 200 in 2008. You are always very helpful I appreciate that, cheers Eoin. P S I do look at the auction sites in Japan and see a few of them still over there, my favourite Japanese car though is an R34 GTR with the Nismo front end and wings, crazy money though!

No-one really knows about how many are left as a lot weren't registered properly and the figures are mixed between domestic vehicles and imports. Would imagine there's still a few thousand scattered about the British Isles hopefully, both on and off the road. Numbers aside it's now a rare sight to see a GT or V on the roads these days.

The GTR's are some car but the values are through the roof. Supras and RX7's are heading the same way so I can pretty much write off me owning something like that unless I get really lucky!

Thanks for that Jay, I never see GT Turbos here anymore on the roads here ,a few turn up at shows but that’s it.Back in the early 2000’s I saw many of them around here. I looked at over 20 of them all over Ireland and bought my one in Dublin, there was 35,000 kilometers on it , there is 110,000 kilometers on it now. I do all my servicing myself and use only Toyota genuine filters etc. Fingers crossed for you that you get lucky with the RX7 or Supra ! I am currently working on my first car and hope to have it on the road next week a 1981 Capri 2.8 I have this since I was 21. Probably not your thing but BMW’s are my main passion specifically ///M ones and I own 3 of them. Since I was a kid in school I wanted one. I can do all my own diagnostics and codings. Here is my Capri , cheers Eoin.

Quite the collection, nice to see you have a varied taste!

I can appreciate a good M3 - even drove one round the Ring in fact - but I just look wrong in one :D

I have 2 M3’s Jay I bought my E36 in London 17 years ago tiny mileage on it currently 34k miles. I bought my 2018 F80 M3 last year less than 7 thousand on that. I bought my 2007 M6 in Scotland 9 years ago 26k miles on that. The M6 is a Jekyll and Hyde car if ever there was one super luxurious and an out and out hot rod when the afterburners are fully lit I absolutely love it ! That S85 V10 is a masterpiece of engineering. Cheers.
