i unplugged the power feed to the gauge and it made no difference. i'll pull the gauges out and check the connectors are in properly

Unfortunately the genuine one has the same issue... Could an aftermarket rev counter cause this?

Thanks for all the help, I've got a genuine one ordered from a motor factors.

Done that already and the gauge didn't shoot into the red, old sensor has been working fine other than the run issues

i suppose i should ask around local motor factors for a more trustworthy replacement part to see if that cures the issue

would brittle wires be causing the gauge to shoot past the red even when the engine isn't running? the old sensor seems to function properly in relation to the temp gauge, so i'm not conviced it's the wiring

It's a Kerr-Nelson sensor, no idea how genuine it is but it doesn't sound like a cheap Chinese clone

I have the later triangular plug sensor, anything I can do with it to fix the gauge?

all the connectors look to be in good shape, no oil weeps from the distributor

I don't think the car has had the engine replaced before, certainly hasn't in my ownership

i'll source a fresh sensor and then try it again

I've just given the car a good run, the management light is presenting the same ways as it did previously

i've swapped the coolant temp sensor for a used yaris part, it's made no difference to the car's starting apart from two starts after i put the part in i cleared the codes before installing it, just to be sure

after a bit of reading up on other forums and ECU code lists, code 33 is for the ISCV i've replaced the iscv previously, and since cleaned it. the throttle body gasket is rather tired, would it be advisable to replace it?

It seems to be blinking 2 2 3 3, 22 is for a coolant temp sensor short and there is no 33 code

i did that, that's how i'd sorta narrowed it down to the map or the throttle body sensors. i'll check it again tomorrow to be sure
