4E-FTE cylinder head height

Hi guys,

I am rebuling an engine and i would like to know i can re-use the cylinder head.
My issue is that i cannot found the maker's recommended minimum cylinder head height (limit) in order to measure and decide if i would proceed with head's resurface or not to the machine shop. Furthermore I do not have the service history of the engine and according to my customer's feedback it has been already re-surfaced once.

Any comments/thoughts are welcome!

Regards
Kyriakos

Does it need a resurface ?
The tolerance should be in the service book, Jay could probably open the page blindfolded :)
No idea if it tells you the overall actual head thickness tolerance but.

To be honest I wouldn't try to re-assemble the engine without resurface the head first, this is of course my opinion.
It has a slightly warpage only in the diagonal dimension (>0.05mm), from the upper left corner to the down right corner in the 2nd picture.
Jay could you please shed some light on this, i would apprecciate your feedback to know the head thickness tolerance that Toyota recommends for this engine.

Can't find the 4efte specific data that that shouldn't be too far off it. IMO you're right to get it skimmed if you have the chance.

1/2mm or 20 thousands of an inch
Measure it in the centre with the level angled across and again using the opposite corners. That's the gte engine method, can't see the fte being any different

Thank you very much for the replies Jay and Skiny! I have cross-checked the warpage on both cylinder head and block as per Toyota's instructions. I am afraid that Toyota does not allow to do any skimming job to their cylinder heads although obviously most of the team members (including myself) eventually goes down this route (especially when buliding a forged engine). I am attaching a very interesting article for anyone interested for cylinder heads inspection / blueprinting.

How was it when you checked it Mate ?
Thicker head gaskets are normally used when skimmed blocks/heads are involved :)

Good article :)

Just because Toyota say no doesn't mean it won't work. A light skim isn't going to take too much off so you should get away with that hopefully. Non-interference engine and a bit of a safety margin on the compression helps the 4EFTE.

As mentioned you could always spec a thicker gasket. Or fit two (old-skool Barbados stylee!)

Block is on spot! Cylinder head has a slightly warpage only in the diagonal dimension (>0.05mm), from the upper left corner to the down right corner in the 2nd picture posted above. I know that thicker head gaskets are used but for this specific car i want to raise the compression closer to 8.8 to 9.0:1, so will see after measuring for each cylinder the combustion chamber volume and decide what thickness to go.

I agree! My issue with this cylinder head is that i don't know how much in the past was skimmed. Anyway i have to measure the valve clearance to piston in order to be on the safe side before any assembly take place. Thank you both guys!!

You can skimm the head by 1mm if you had a reason to. So normal service skimming is not a problem at all.
If you skimm the head by 0.1mm then the compression will be effected by less than 1 point.
You do not need to measure piston to valve on a 4EFTE. It is non interference.

I am also going for 9:1. Have a 0.76mm Cometic, Arias FLAT top pistons and will need to skimm the head.
8.8-9 is the sweet spot.
