4efe or 4afe box + 4efte in a Corolla E11?

Hi. I am about to buy a 4efte engine to swap it with a 4efe in a Corolla E11. I was told I can use a 4afe gearbox as it has same resistance to torque as the 4efte box has. Is it true? If so it would save my money. It will cost me £350 compared to the £700 for a 4efte gearbox. I also need a list with every component I need for a smmoth swap. I will buy the engine with the original fuse box. Can I get a diagram or step by step to connect everything right and get the loom in the Corolla correctly? I was told to keep the Corolla inlet manifold and adapt it to the 4efte turbo. Precious information that would save me labor time. Thank you

the gearbox is essentially the same.. however,u will need to change the bell house to an e-engine bell housing,

Could possibly get some comparison pics of what he means at the weekend, I've a Corolla box in the lock up.
I appreciate it I’ve been speaking with my mechanic today. We discussed about the swap. He’s curious to know more details about the airbox sensor new placement in the 4efte. Also the CAT sensor swap from the 4efe exhaust to the 4efte manifold. Where exactly should it go? He’s concerned about how to adapt the 4EFE inlet to the 4efte IC cold air intake. Which volume of front intercooler should he choose as I don’t know volume volume of the original 4efte IC. Maybe 20% bigger to be able to gain the horsepower when mapping the piggyback? Does the MOP4EFTE sensor come with the engine? Someone said it should be changed with theCorolla E11 4EFE when swapping with the 4efte. How should he adapt the engine front mound? He asked me for a fuse box diagram to be able to swap 4efe to 4efte fuse box. A good mapping could cost €600.
Could you help with some of this information I need?

Could you take a few pics of the gearbox you have in your vehicle Frankie?

Just want to make sure it's the same box as I have here.

I should put it on the bridge to take the pictures. I’m 99% sure that the gearbox is the C 56. The last 4EFE European versione in 1998. I’ll post pictures as soon as I can get under the car.

yes that correct.. so all you will need is the bellhousing that matches the current engine
Just to make sure. The Corolla E11 1998 4EFE gearbox fits the 4EFTE Engine right? This means that the 4efe bolt housing fits. Did someone ever try to do the 4efte swap on a Corolla E11 gearbox? I need to be sure I’m planning the right checklist to get all the pieces together and buy the engine before December otherwise I will lose it.

Should do - I fitted a 4EFTE gearbox to a E11 Corolla 4EFE with no real hassle.

I had a look at an E11 Corolla box I have spare (forgive the state of it):

The bell housings (the large bell shaped part that bolts to the block) look to be the same.

Two things of note..

The speedo gets it's reading via a manual cable on the 4EFTE gearbox which screws in here:

Your car uses an electronic version so that would need swapped:

20201121_135015.jpg

I can give this a whirl to see how easy it is, never done it before so worth exploring.

Also challenge number two is that your engine has a fourth mount on the front of the gearbox that the 4EFTE doesn't have:

20201121_134931.jpg

This will probably get in the way of whatever turbo kit/downpipe you are going to run. There might be some custom fabrication involved which no-one except the guy doing the swap will be able to sort for you. If it were me I'd try running without that mount and see how much it affects things. All our Starlets are running bigger power than the 4EFE and we all live with three engine/gearbox mounts. Can't see it being too big a factor.

The rear and side mounts could be swapped from your current box to ensure fitment to your car. The bolt holes seem to be in the same place as the 4EFTE housing.

This is great. It helps a lot to see The world house open. I agree with you when it comes to getting rid of the front mound on the Corolla. It would be much easier.
The other challenge will be modifying the lower steering pump bracket. It seems that the only way would be to cut off little little piece on the sliding hole to get the water pump belt in and I would have to build A metal junction to adapt the pump bolt to the bracket. Did you ever do this before?

Sounds like a lot of messing around..

I don't remember having any trouble when installing the 4EFE in place of the 4EFTE but that's because the pipes were already in place.

Two choices, either get the 4EFE PAS pump out of the way of the turbo stuff by using custom brackets or use a 4EFTE PAS pump set up and work out the pipe work.

I'd hazard a guess that the E11 hydraulic pipes to the pump will be a different angle/shape so you may find it could need customised. Here's the connections I'm taking about:

20201121_143448.jpg

The hard metal pipe is the feed and is under pressure, it comes from the steering rack. The larger rubber hose is just the return to the bottle. Those connections need to be at a certain angle to attach them.

You able to provide an image of how yours sits at the minute?

Oh - random third choice - delete the PAS.

Fourth choice for bonus points - Mount a remote electric PAS pump somewhere else :D

I have a question that might be silly but I need to know. The scenario is to keep the 4EFE gearbox and Bolt-house and screw on the 4EFTE Engine. Why are we discussing about the bold house if it is already placed on the 4efe engine? Are you telling me that I need to have the 4EFTE Bolthouse to be screwed on the 4EFE gearbox? Thank you

That's what I mean, no need to swap the bell housing.

You should be able to retain the 4EFE box.

If you needed to upgrade to the 4EFTE box in future you could just swap across the bits I mention.

I am a bit confused here. What is the PAS pump? The pump with wheel that holds the belt? Correct? I was told to keep the 4EFE pump and just adapt the lower bracket by putting an extra metal to join the bracket to the hole in the pump in order to keep the filter in place. Also, I would have to cut a piece of the adjustable hole in the bracket to get the belt in and out when needed. Am I right?

Power Assisted Steering.

The pump is driven by a belt from the engine and generates pressure in the steering rack making it much easier to turn the steering wheel.

The 4EFE pump sits very low. You may find it will get in the way of the turbo manifold. In fact the oil filter itself will need shifted too but that's another conversation..

You can see the two brackets for the pump on the left, right next to the oil filter:

20201121_143623.jpg

The 4EFTE pump sits higher and the oil filter is moved to one side out of the way (old pic with no pump fitted but you can see the three bolt holes for the pump at top right):

Brake pads and discs1401.jpg

In fact it's probably easier to explain that the oil filter needs moved to accommodate the turbo and the PAS pump needs moved to accommodate the oil filter.
