4efte smoking problem??

Ok, so i picked up this car 4 months ago. It has been a great car so far, but some little issues have become apparent in the last few weeks. 1993 Paseo w/ 4e swap...In the states

The car was professionally swapped by a Japanese Engine remanufacturer/wholesaler, Jarco Inc. Everything runs as it should, but as of late im having an issue with oil loss and smoking.

The car will start right up, run till the tires fall off and never once smoke. Until i stop and wait for it to cool down (ie turbo timer). the car idles for a good 2 mins then right as i'm about to turn it off....it starts smoking pretty good.??? the smoke to my best guess is a greyish/black, but with the weather as cold as it is of late...that could be closer to white ...ive been told by my Roomate, who is a Toyota Tech, that it is blueish/black and looks like the car is just running rich.

The other problem i'm having is oil loss. The car has never once seemed to leak oil from any place other then from the oil filter being somewhat loose when i purchsed the car, and is something i frequently check. Ive never seen an oil spot in the driveway, or at work??? This leads me to believe that the car is burning it off. Its about a Qt every 500 miles, so it worries me slightly as i often take long trips. I plan on compression/leak down testing the car soon, but in what ways am i able to check the turbo for a possible worn seal/cartridge? I've noticed up until i changed the PCV valve that there was oil in the I/C pipes, but havent noticed it since the change. Are the 4E's known to have accessive blow by like the 4age? do rings collapse often?

PS. the car is on stock boost, with stock cat, stock starlet exhaust (muffler) and has ~70K on the motor itself (127K on the chassis)..basically swapped with no further mods

Well the prob your having is the same I have if I'm not wrong I thing it's your rings

:( well i'm going to have it pressure tested this weekend, so i should get a better idea soon. Ive been told it might be rings or stem seals before. Hopefully my turbo just needs a rebuild. I'm pretty sure rings would put my car outta service for a couple days

you have a topmount with no vent? thats a recipe for disaster

On stock boost? the engine has a knock sensor, so adjustments in timing are made once the I/C has become heat soaked. I didnt think running 5 lbs would really matter. hell my Legacy ran 8 lbs stock with NO I/C at all from the Factory

if its built to have no ic then that is fine but that is not a very good idea.

your problem does sound like turbo seals.

have u checked the turbo oil seals..? but from what ur saying its more possible that its the valve stem seals.. i dont really see the rings going that easily on such low boost..

but yeah having the interwarmer without a vent isnt doing any good to the already hot air blowing ct9 lol...

Yeah i'm not purposely running it like this, but its just how i purchased it. I planned on doing a FMIC soon, but maybe its time i hurry and just cut a scoop for the one i have now. It just looks so dang tacky with a hood scoop on a paseo lol

How would i check for bad turbo seals other then taking the turbo completely apart? i wouldnt wanna do that unless i had the parts to rebuild it on hand just in case

like above im not sure how else to check them then to pull the turbo out???

Well stem seals are alittle more promising. Hopefully its just something easy

I agree its doing the engine no good, i guess i should push the I/C to the top of the list of things to do. i was honestly hoping to have this car and NOT modify it lolol. :p

you are using the wrong grade lad... try using 5w-30 or 5w-40 if you wanna go synthetic. or you may stick to the factory recommended at 10w-40 semi synthetic. cheers from Bangladesh!
