I can see that naturally the custodianship aspect has extended due to the nature of a web site but as Phil points out this leaves aspects unresolved for all concerned.

Seeing as somebody asked somewhere on the last page..

I'll try to clarify how it all stands on here regards your copyrights, the structure of the site and how it all should work.. <deep breath>

The TGTT forum consists of a series of boards where you can ask questions, answer questions and even question answers. Whatever you post is yours and we are incredibly grateful for your input. Yes there are a few guidelines on what you can post (check them out HERE) but generally speaking you all own your copyrights. We may place a copy of the more important stuff in the Awesome Section but even that is yours too.

Some boards write a copyright transfer into their terms and conditions that allow them to claim copyright over material posted but I'm glad we aren't one of them. We have tailored the board to allow users to control their own content. For example you can close a thread you have started, amend a post you have made or even delete it altogether. I don't see why the authors rights should be restricted so these functions are only a few mouse clicks away.

Basically TGTT is the collective product of it's users. If you need to ask a random question the environment is here for you, if you wish to seek answers there are a dizzying amounts of past discussions to research, even if you wish to contribute your findings it is all welcome. It was always intended as a free flowing information resource, that was the initial goal that Macker set out to achieve.

Naturally there is an immense amount of other areas to the site but I'm sticking with my technical content roots as that's where the copyrights usually apply.

I hope that makes some sort of sense to everyone.

Now, regards moderation of said content..

The site owner generally starts the show with the aid of a friend or two set up as moderators. As the site grows the need for site moderation grows, I'm sure that hardly needs to be said.

The site owner soon has a team of moderators for a host of different areas of the site. That's usually when a few super moderators appear. These chaps have moderation rights over the whole board so they are able to keep tabs on all aspects.

After a while the admin side of moderation becomes a burden. The site owner will promote a trusted moderator in most cases into an admin role to take the weight off their role.

So basically there you have it, a team of moderators, supermoderators and a handful of administrators are entrusted with the daily maintenance of the forum activities and the site owner can slowly take his eyes off the road.

And that's when the problems start lol..

You may think I'm breaking this down into smaller chunks for the slower members of the class but there's only so much I can hold in my head at one time. I hope my memoirs are easier to write than this!

Right, just for the hell of it let's pretend I'm the site owner who has entrusted the moderation duties of my forum to my carefully selected staff. Bear in mind they have all accepted their positions on the site in good faith. I'm content that I can trust them with my life if a hostage situation were to occur in TGTT Towers.

Or if you'd prefer:

Right, just for shits and giggles let's pretend I'm the antichrist who has entrusted the moderation duties of my forum to my carelessly selected staff. Bear in mind they have all accepted their positions on the site in good faith. I consider them all my bitches and they will heed my every cry lest they feel the wrath of my bullwhip once more.

After some time a coup occurs. My TGTT crewmates then copy the TGTT forum boards, user accounts and content and host their own version (TGTT2) elsewhere.

No matter which version you choose there is a huge betrayal of trust between me and the people I chose to regulate my website. There is also an infringement between those who own the copyrighted material (ie every mofo on the site) and those entrusted to maintain it on TGTT. Not to mention the information that may be held in the user accounts and PM boxes of the members.

I know that I would be pissed.

If within the few days after this event I get hit with a random hacker attack I'm going to be understandably paranoid (and that's even before the drugs have kicked in).

Disclaimer : Worth mentioning that all the above is in the hypothetical. The actual chances of a TGTT takeover are slim. All our moderators have undergone strict psychological conditioning as part of their TGTT training. These dogs don't stray. Although that WeeJohn one keeps humping visitors legs lol..

Hilarious comments as always.
I'm waiting the day i get to be a mod.. Ill hump legs if it helps? ha.

on topic it would be interesting to know from a solicitor the full story and if it is actually illegal or not, as you say the information is owned by the posters?

either way TGTT community love.

Personally, what was done was wrong, it was copying, if you want a new site where you don't get called a wanker then start your own.

But then, I have done my fair share of torrent downloading.

So whilst I think what was done was fundamentally wrong and I wouldn't have done it myself (cus I'm able to man up when someone calls me names( [yeo]), self interest means it won't stop me using ukso if I need to sell something or the like.

So to conclude, I don't really care cus I prefer TGTT.

out of interest who started this site jay? is it a user on here

A bit off-topic but I'll allow it..

Macker started TGTT back in 2001. It took off like a rocket lol. He backed down around 2008 (ish) when things were just too hectic to juggle cyberspace and real life. Caught up with him on Facebook last year and he's doing real well for himself. A fireman now would you believe!

I got handed a mod badge in 2003 from memory, those were the days! It was like stepping into a warzone.

Still I actually prefer the relaxed nature of the site now that the goldrush is over. TGTT has matured in synch with it's members. We can all concentrate on quality rather than quantity which is a bonus for everyone.
