Car Importation to Dublin, Registering in Northern Ireland

Alright guys,

Finally coming back to the starlet world hopefully.

I have sourced a car in japan to import to Dublin, Ireland. I just wondered how customs and VAT are paid if the car is going to be registered in Northern Ireland ? would it be to Irish customs then proof of payment to HMRC before registering ?

Need to try and clarify this before I begin the process.
