brake efficacy

now that we are talking about brakes, can i throw a spanner in the works and say that bigger brakes don't necessarily give you shorter stopping distance. they for sure give you more efficient brakes in that you don't have to work the pedal as hard and they may fade way less but the overall stopping power boils down to your tires & your road surface -- softer compound tires & of course good tarmac always gives you the best results.. so at times having the biggest brakes is not necessarily the best idea, esp for our smaller lighter-weight cars.. anyone with me on this..? :)

The single and twin pots came one the st185 I think one was front the Jdm version and one the uk. I have the single pot conversion and you can really lean on them for a while and they dont give up. I agree with you but after having the bigger single pots fitted i would recommend them to anyone especially with a good set of pads they make a massive difference :)

right guys,, early st185 had same brakes as the st165 the twin pots....
it was the later st 185 models that had the single piston...
ive got the 165 twins and over standard starlet brakes or with uprated pads, the stopping feel is more better...
can only presume it be even better with the single 185 caliper as accordfing to alltrac usa it produces more braking torque then the 165 twins...

st165 you need a 3mm spacer to centre disc but in essence it bolts on to excisting holes and nuts etc... took me 45 mins to swap over both fronts...

the single st185 as far as im aware you need a spigot ring made up and to grab a set of vauxhall discs which i believe are 277mm...

yeh there off a sw20 2000 mr2 thought id mentioned they were twin pots

I am looking at these also. The Sera has mr2 brakes as standard these are the 18mm disk with MR2 single pot. The same mr2 single pot is also used with a 22mm disk but the mr2 sw20 twin pots which are 2 x 36 dia come with 25mm and 30mm disks. I have read the twin pots will fit with the 18mm and 22mm disks using their smaller brackets but wonder are there any issues doing this? or is it just a straight bolt on.

I am a little confused because some sites say st 165 are 2x38 dia some say 43 dia but I found a site that shows 2x36 dia pots so I think - now the mr2 sw20 are the same as the celica st165 which also use a 25mm disk.

With regard to centreing the disk , I thought if you use the MR2 18mm disk bracket with the 2 pod it would be centred and does not need a spacer ?

I can get spigot ring made up no bother. Which vauxhall they off? I've got a set of 256 and 288 off my old corsa lying about but not much use if there 277 :(

There are two different calipers for the sw20 to. The bolt holes to the carrier on the caliper are slightly wider apart on the 25mm disks so they don't transfer over to the 30mm disk carriers. As I said I've got mine fitted with standard Glanza disks just by using different carrier Not sure how much the pads will wear down before the piston will pop out the caliper though.

That is exactly what I was wondering. I was hoping to upgrade to some 22mm disks with 22mm MR2 carriers to minimise the piston popping. I make the Mr2 series 1 , 18mm disk caliper spacing 152 mm approx which should be the same as the MR2 series 2 22mm disk caliper.
Luke what is the number stamped on the carrier you are using with the twin pots?

any pics of the caliper luke?
they look similer to the st185s?

FYI an interesting twist is the st165 2 pots were also fitted to the Celica GT4 ST185 Import models, that were originally fitted with 14" wheels.
