Almost constant.

Have been told its the brake backing plates? (dust covers?)

but wont have a chance to check till 5pm... so want to take as many possible suggestion home with me as i can :)

I guess jacking up each wheel and giving a spin should tell you. Most likely bearing or brake related.
Good luck

I dont see why the brake covers would not grind below 10mph unless they are so rusted the wind is blowing them onto the disc. But mine have rubbed before on full lock and not when driving straight so its a possibility.

Chock the rear wheels.
Put the car on axle stands up front (inner side of the control arms is usually good).
Start up and engage 2nd gear.
Let is run then look around for your possible suspects. If you have ABS, it may throw a fit but this is a short procedure.
Good luck.

In my short experience the wheel bearings aren't great on these cars. (Maybe just a bad run in my case). Probably best getting them all done at once for peace of mind

I don't get when people complain of the wheel bearings. First off, I never install them as they come out of the box. The little white grease they come pre-packed with doesn't strike me as sufficient. I always;
- clean & repack them in fresh lithium grease
- clean the steering knuckle thoroughly
- install them in a super sterile environment
- use good quality dust seals

I've never had an issue. Year #4 on the same ones and they are still mint.. O:)

Reason I can complain is because after I got the car I put rear bearings in and had to replace a year later(genuine from toyota). Then 1 of them went again so replaced that. Then one of the fronts needed done so done both while the mechanic had the press etc. So 7 bearings in 2 years all done to the procedure above.
As I said It may have been a bad run and all has been good since they have been done again but nevertheless the bearings have had most attention over any part of the car.

That really doesnt sound right, any bearing should last for more time than that.

I had an awful sound from one of my bearings when we first took mine out on the test runs, sounded like a pod racer from star wars and was a complete headache on the motorways. After the bearing was changed that sound was gone which was great, but then it let me hear the bearing on the other side was the same just a bit quieter. I'm on the same chase as you, hunting down those funny sounds lol
