corolla 4efte conversion

The FX is the 1.6 4A-GE 20 valve 'silvertop'.

I've got the 4E-FE engined car.

You are right my mistake there. I was getting confused with the 1.8l 7AFE engined GLXI we get here.

To go back to the gearbox issue again, there is no way the Starlet box will fit in our car as the rear mount is not even close and the shafts are the wrong length.

Hmm, wouldn't using a Corolla mount and Corolla shafts solve the problem? Ep82 uses C150 gearbox, so does the Corolla and that fit's fine here.
Ive also checked the C56 glanza gearbox, that fit's also fine in the Corolla E10. Allready has a place where you can attach the front mount, should have some pics somewhere to demonstrate it..

and the selector cable bracket.

Hello Guys !

I restart this post because i have done this swap , every mechanical connects are finished ( mounting / fuel , transmission ) and i would like to correct something : the drive shafts of the corolla are compatible with the C52 of Starlet.
But my main issue now is the wiring loom, of sur !
Someone has said : it was also be done , but if you can give me the way to follow this is so great !!

For informations my fuel pump is connected until the interior fusebox ( i have checked with a 12v transformer ) but after i don't know.
For facilitate the conversion , i have switched the 2E engine fusebox with a 4AGE Fusebox , so it's mainly the same , but with EFI relay ;)
I wait your advices !

Thank you very much

Use the Corolla box
Hi guys. I am in the process of buying a 4EFTE for a SWAP with a 4efe on a Corolla E11. Some engines come with the fuse box wires cut but I found it with the original fuse box. It will save my mechanic time while wiring. The decision I have to make is if I should buy the engine with the 4efte gearbox or not. I would save £700. Some people told me that the Corolla E 11 gearbox is OK to run the 4EFTE engine. Other people told me it is too weak and I should buy the 4EGE (if I spelled it correct) 5 valve engine gearbox that resists the torque. Please help me decide because this gearbox will cost me 350 pounds. I will save money that I can use elsewhere. My mechanic asked me for detailed detailed swapping list to save labor time. I really hope you can help. Thank you!

Hi bud, welcome to the site.

I actually remember Wee John and Ted's 4EFTE Corolla at Kirkistown race track and have experienced a few hot laps. Crazy..

If I remember correctly the Corolla gearbox will hold up fine so long as you show it mechanical sympathy. Might be the easier option as getting the turbo box to fit will require swapping the bell housing and I'm near sure your speedo drive for the clocks will need swapped too. It's all labour at the end of the day and it adds up.

Seen the 4EFE gearboxes take a bit of abuse, even 260bhp in one particular case. If you aren't planning on rallying the car and sticking to a basic tune initially you can always factor a gearbox upgrade further down the line.

Bare in mind that the turbo boxes aren't bullet proof either.

This is precious information. i’m glad because I’m gonna drop the gearbox and buy only the 4EFTE engine. Would you be able to give me a list of to do things that I can discuss with my mechanic before purchasing the engine? I would adopt my modified exhaust. I already got rid of the silencer. I would add a fuel pump because I heard it helps. The rest is about what you guys tell me. I heard about the water pump and keeping the steering pump in place. What else should I do?
These times are hard for my work so I have to be careful how I spend my money but I really wanna do this because it gives me good energy. I am sitting tight! Thank you.

Hmm, then my Corolla E10 must be some kind of miracle. I've installed my stock 4E-FE gearbox on to the 4E-FTE with no problems at all. The Corolla drive shafts fit fine with any other non LSD FTE gearbox, because that same gearbox is used in the Corolla E10 FX and the Corolla after that with the blacktop in it.

If you have power steering, the 4EFE power steering will not fit on the engine, unless you have a E11 power steering. I used my FTE power steering and that worked okey with some slight modification regarding a leak in the oil feed into the pump.

I'm selling my car in a few months, depending on the conditions the wiring loom maybe sold separately (custom made for FTE into E10).

Don't forget the stock FTE cat will NOT fit because the Corolla has an extra gearbox mount. I've got a custom made downpipe to avoid that problem. The E10 also has a subframe under the car. That sucks because there is little room to get a decent 2,5" exhaust travelling under the car, but it is possible with a guy that knows his stuff.
Hi. It’s been a few years since you did this post. I am about to swap a 4EFTE in a Corolla E11. I think I figured out most of the process. I still have to clarify how the car will react to the ECU swap. I didn’t study the electrical part but I presume that the ECU controls the engine. What I am not sure about is what controls the rest of the electric parts in the car. Is everything going to work when I switch to ECUs?
Another question. Is that for EFE Corolla air conditioning gonna fit the 4EFTE Starlet EP 91?
I will try to use the Corolla steering pump on the 4EFTE. I read enough about the bracket modification in order to reach the lower hole on the engine. Thanks
