Diesel vs Petrol for a daily

Hi guys,
I had a smash in my daily driven VAG a couple of weeks ago. It’s literally a 2005 diesel tractor with 223k on the clock and has provided me with trouble free motoring for the past 10 years.
However after driving a friends petrol car in the meantime daily, it’s made me realise how smoother petrol cars are in comparison to diesels.
I do a 22 mile round trip to work daily with a mix of motorway and a road driving so I always thought a diesel would be the best option. However I’m now swaying towards getting a petrol daily to replace my tdi VAG.
Would this be a wise move based in my weekly mileage or just stick with another diesel?

Please let me know your thoughts. I won’t be buying a new car… I would be happy with anything circa 2009-2012…. Ideally another boring VAG…golf mk5 GTI or A3 Tfsi… or maybe a lower spec model.

Thanks

Even at 45mpg, £20 doesn't get you very far nowadays!!!

Petrol all day for me. I would only consider a diesel if I was doing big miles. Even then I doubt I would bother with one

i've driven various diesel pickups daily over the years, since 2008 iirc..a minimum of 50km each trip.

however if you are doing constant short trips with lots of traffic, i think a gasoline engine may be better for you,,,especially if you have strict emission laws where your diesel vehicle has to be equipped with DPF (diesel particulate filter), EGR, etc...in these cases, intake manifold, egr, dpf, etc. may get sooty comparatively faster and become expensive to maintain/replace
