DIY: digital air intake temp

the temp readings update every 11seconds :(

i think it would have been better doing some good search before. cos i would have got myself a temp guage and sensor and would fit it in the plenum somewhere

It looks like its a 1 wire temp sensor as well Sheldon, they are not very accurate either. Most thermocouples have 2 wires of different materials that generate a mili volt signal as temps change, the single wire ones dont generate as they resistance based and not that accurate.

no its 2 wire and very accurate. i have an industrial guage that they use in boilers and when i put them near each other they give the same reading... even when i put on the car heaters they gave the same reading

Its just a different display you need then, maybe you could liberate some sort of instrument you might come across in your job sometime lol.

Just installed mine and took the car for a spin.
It seems it only updates once every 10sec like said before. But the temp does increase when the car is stationary. So it must work, not sure about the accuracy though.
Was a bugger to find a spot to mount it.

Make sure that you have extra cable to lengthen the sensor wire if you want to place the display on the drivers side. The sensor wire is way to short, so I used some speaker cable.lol.
Not bad for a 10euro mod.

What would be the ideal intake temp? Mine is reading 26 degrees celsius when moving. 40 when stationary.

.
i recieved mine today, but the cable is abit short!
how did you extend it just cut it and take the sheath off and add some more cable to it?

Yeah, just cut the cable halfway and join a cable between them.
Remember to tag one of the wires (if they are not tagged already for polarity) to make sure that you don't reconnect them wrongly back together.

I used speaker wire and it works fine.

im going to use speaker wires... already cut the wires from the temp and cig lighter... u didn't tag the wires from the temp sensor and they don't have any markings :S so i have to do it trial and error

where did you put the sensor?

You have to be careful when extending the wire that you dont add any resistance, so you are best off soldering and using wire that is slightly thicker than what it comes with.

Saying that...i doubt its accuracy is overly great anyway :)

Exactly what I thought. I never tested it before i added the extension.
Therefore I don't know if the extension has any influance on the reading.
It's a cheap device, I wouldn't expect it to be that accurate.

When i cold start the car, I get a reading of 26 degrees in a garaged area.
30-37 degrees when driving smoothly and car is heated up.
Half a hour's traffic it maxed out at 60.8 degrees.
With hard acceleration the reading dropped to 10 degrees.

This engine is N/A. I would like to know what temperature the turbo's are getting in.

I placed the sensor on the outside of the filter, in between the wedges of the metal, dead center.
I know it's supposed to be placed onto the throttle body, but I dont want to take the risk and break the engine if that little bastard would get sucked in.

well my sensor is placed just inside the throttlebody and i get about 20 degrees on start up about 40-45 wen driving and about 60 max wen sitting still (remember the weather is extremely hot) so i imagine it would be a lot lower wen there is cold weather

Turbo-fever where is you filter located? Behind the grill?

I was thinking with an intercooler it would be close to 10 degrees when driving.

Good place to mount it Sheldon. I have had no problems yet with mine. Working like a bomb.
