Do tuning companies take on too much work?

One conversation to get going. After reading numerous slagging off of tuners in the Starlet world it does beg the question, are they taking on too much work?

Word of mouth spreads very fast and it might be tempting to book in more work than they can realistically handle to keep up with the quality you would expect, and the quality they built their reputation on.

No talking any specifics here just raising the question for discussion.

Some are an absolute joke people waiting years on forged engines they payed for and leaving cars in for over a year to get pretty basic stuff done. Pure greed

its not always greed. some don't like to turn down work to keep the work flow going. once you start turning down work people stop going to you.

it is a fine line and it doesn't only happen with tuning companies. most companies that supply an engineering type service tend to go one way or the other. especially if they are newer or smaller companies as their work flow can be very sporadic and they don't have the manpower and resources when the work rate increases too quickly.

another factor is that workers don't tend to stay around for long in the motor trade so they could take on enough work for 5 blokes and then 2 leave so they are suddenly left with more work that can physically get done. even if they employ others, they will need to come up to speed and could turn out to be useless anyway.


sometimes it is just greed. but its not always as clear cut as that.
 
You've just described poorly run businesses though there is companies that run well from the beginning because of proper planning. People come and go in every job that's life its what every area deals with day in day out. A lot of 'tuners' are cowboy companies just a couple of mechanics with no clue how to do business imo

agreed, but even the best businesses fuck up from time to time. its the same as the building trade as well.

pretty much any company that provides an engineering type service tends to have very severe peaks and troughs in business, especially when starting out.
some work out ok, some do not.

with a business that provides what is regarded as a non-essential service, work flow is always going to be an issue however well you try and plan.

Agreed - look at Nokia for example - used to be a lead company and now??? In MY PERSONAL opinion Apple will be next Nokia in less than 10 years - I can even bet money on that!

Re topic - yes DEFINITELY - OVERPRICED, not just the tuners - but the garages as well - compared to the IT market the Car's market is charging a lot more and look for these Dealer's labour cost - simply shocking, especially as we all know that the actual mechanics at the Dealership doesn't earn a lot of money....
