Electrical issue

Hi All,

I've been working on my own project on and off for the past few months. I usually try and start it once a week to keep the ould juices flowing ( both me and the car ). Recently an old gremlin popped its head up. When I go to start the car all of the boost lights, light up on the dash and fluctuate then when it finally starts up after a bit of a struggle it runs with a miss fire and zero power. Idles fine but as soon as you press the accelerator you get the misfire again and the boost lights light up.

I've tried a differient ecu with no help.

Any direction I should be looking?

map sensor may be registering the wrong signal. IE dying. try a new one. or unplug it to see if it helps

Doesn't the ecu throw a check engine code?
possibly, starlets arent exactly sensitive, perhaps there is dirt inside the line / near the sensor? a dying sensor can be healthy, but be dirty, obscured, have damaged wiring, corrosion, etc, your symptoms point to one such dying sensor, wherever that is.

There is no engine code unfortunatly.

There was a new dizzy and rotor fitted just before it went off the road, all the leads seem to be in good condition but I will double check.

I'll check the map sencor but to be honest I have a ME221 and 3bar map sencor to go in so don't want to be forking out for a new one.

It seems to point to an electrical issue to be honest its just the boost lights that are throwing me off. Do they regester through the factory map sencor?

I would just rather get it running stock before taking the risk of plugging in the ME221 if there is an electrical issue. I may have to bight the bullet and fit the wideband and ECU.

Check your connectors are hooked up correctly on the thermostat housing Frankie.

Think I had something similar on my mk1.

Probably the wrong tree but I'll have a think about it, see if anything springs to mind :)

boost lights register at 2 postions, the map sensor, and Somewhere inside the cluster near the light itself, i feel as if it is a bad connection to a sensor that is the cause here. hesitation often comes from the main coolant sensor or the TPS being fuckey, intermittent disconnects wont throw a code either :( unless its a modern ecu or vehicle

Probably an earthing issue somewhere, clean and inspect all the connectors, if you have a fuse tester with the wee spike you can bypass the connectors and check the wiring before them to the other connector if you get me :)

Thanks guys for the suggestions, I want to get her running standard before I go onto the Standalone/Hybrid and all the joy that will bring me.

I have a 3bar map sencor on my boost controller that I'm going to use as a signal for the ecu, also looking into an analog TPS. So they are two parts that are being replaced as is. Plus I'm going to ad additional sencors, like a second water temp, plus a pre and post turbo oil temp. So don't want to go replacing standard sencors too much if I'm not going to be using them anyway
