Engine problem/ low revs

Hey guys, hope everyone is doing fine. Thought the site was down.

I have an issue with my Gt that is quite puzzling, the car recently is not revving pass 3k or 4k rpm in 1st to 3rd gears and when driving acceleration is very slow. I did a diagnostic test and detected nothing, check plugs and other things still nothing unusual. Oh the throttle cable seem a bit stiff but after spraying with lube it appears fine.

Just some history on the car. It was off the road for 4 years but this have been 1 year back on the road.Mods walboro 255 pump, still stock turbo setup, stock ecu.

I will do a compression test this weekend and see what I get.

Any ideas.

Hey bro,

We're still hanging in here best we can.

Whilst you're checking compression it'd be worth checking the timing just case it's in need of adjustment.

Let us know how you get on,

Jay

Hey Jay, nice to hear. How are things on your side of the World?

I finally got the Gt back and running so trying to keep her on the road.Got some nice plans for her soon such as bigger turbo etc.

Yes I will check the timing as well but a friend was hinting that the throttle cable maybe worn but I will figure it out hopefully soon

hey gtsmurf. how are things your side of the world?...lolololol

well seeing that you got no diagnostic codes maybe check the following: 1) map sensor and hose/wiring connections, 2) ignition system (distributor, leads, ignitor, coil), 3) as Jay said, timing,,make sure distributor has not moved and 4) for good measure just make sure your knock sensor, o2 sensor etc are all still hocked up properly

its weird you have no codes though, are you sure your diagnostic connection is working?

Well guys the issue was a rusty gas tank that had the fuel pump clogged. Replaced the tank and fuel filter and the car is good once again

a rusty tank in barbados!!!!! never seen that being an issue on a starlet before

i've heard a few issues with rusty tanks locally (in barbados), but far and in between
usually from vehicles that have been off the road for an extended period of time ---not driving/starting

i'm not sure if the gas left in the tank causes corrosion??

Remember I said the car was off the road for 4 years and not with a full tank of gas plus I live close to the sea so rusting is the norm. Comparing the old tank to the replacement one was like chalk and cheese, the replacement tank was nice and clean and the aluminium was visible but not in the old tank....quite a bit of rust was inside. But the car is going through the revs quite nice now.

We have a drag meet tomorrow I wished the car was finish so that I could have taken it for a run. Gorganl you going to Bushy Park tomorrow?

I had a starlet Gi off road for the exact same amount of years (4), in a similar region (Caribbean). Gas tank rusted up as well. Had to patch that, change pump/filter, flush oil and change all liquids. Turned over at the first swing of the key tho. Now I'm using a GT.
