Engine temperature

I've noticed recently that on boost my engine temp goes down quite a bit. Temperature always seemed to sit just a tad under half but it seems that with a short run of boost it will drop to around a quarter. (havnt gone to mad to see if it goes lower)
I presume if it was water pump or headgasket the temp would increase?
First thoughts for me is blockage, electrical or thermostat?
Anybody any ideas or seen it before and firstly is this safe.
Tempetature will go back to normal operating temp almost instantly after coming off boost

Seems strange Anto do you have a fmic on the car and when goin fast is cools down a lot maybe but under quater the way seems too far

Maybe a thermostats or somethin man

How about when cruising along off-boost..? That would confirm if the thermo is dead in the 'open' position or perhaps not there to begin with :)
As, in as unlikely as it could be, it may be a wiring problem. We'd need more details..

It could be more sinister, possibly a faulty head gasket is causing air pockets in the cooling system and the temp sensor is not reading the air temp but you would be losing a lot of water from the system then as well. Best bet is the thermostat, easy enough to change and you can top up the system with clean coolant at the same time.

Cheers lads. Will be in the car again later so will check coolant etc but I've never noticed any excessive usage or any at all at that.
@darragh yea I have fmic but been in the car from I got it so this would have been happening all the time.
@ dark_knight seems to be normal temp when cruising along. I noticed this morning that if I just Rev it hard the temp will drop also.
@wee john. I hope it's not head gasket but if it was would it not increase temp instead of cooling

Gave it a check over this morning. It hasn't really used much coolant. Drained the rad this morning. Gave it a flush and put fresh coolant in. Only possible problem I see is that the coolant turned the Orange colour almost instantly after starting up. Could this just be dirt in the rad/system or is it a tell tale that something is wrong?

What colour was the coolant you took out and the stuff you put in? It could be a rusty matrix or heater that is causing the orange, but if the levels are good then its probably not going to affect the symptoms you have been experiencing.

The stuff I took out was rusty also. Replaced with blue and then turned that rusty colour once run. My interior fan has packed in alsoin the last couple of weeks. Hopeing to get down to jays soon to get it sorted. Would the fan packing in mean anything. Could it all be related? Thermostat stuck closed maybe?

Is the fan running or just no heat coming out?

If the fan is running and blowing cold air its a cert the matrix is blocked. It can be cleared out by removing the rubber hoses that attach to the matrix metal pipes that go through the bulkhead and gently flushing it out, through 1 pipe and then the other with a garden hose. Not guaranteed to clear it completely but stripping the whole dash out to replace a matrix is a pure bollocks.

No wee John. The blower itself gradually got slower and slower then stopped. Actually just being curious before it stopped completely I checked the vents with a temperature gun on all temp settings and they were near enough exact. So it must be getting water. I have a 1.3 bar rad cap lying about as well would it do any harm to stick that on and see if this persists?
I'm thinking it has to be a thermostat stuck open or closed but hopefully I can get jay to check next time I'm down.
Thanks
Anthony

Have a look at the thermostat. Theres 3 bolts holding the cover on. You dont need to remove any pipes to get it off. Once you have your thermostat out, boil the kettle and stick it in the hot water, you should see it slowly open if its working fine. If its already open then that could be causing the car to cool off quicker than usual.

You can pick up thermo's for peanuts from Halfrauds and the like.

The orangy water will be rust in the system. Just remove the top and bottom hose and stick the hose pipe in it and let it run for a few mins, then stick the hose in the rad to clear that too.

The issues your having happen to me everyday :) thats because I have a low temp thermostat and it opens at a lower temp. I live in Australia where the general temp is above 30 degrees daily, so need a helping hand cooling

Cheers
