Around here they give warnings & fines i believe.

A friend of mine got caught by DVLA got told to remove them, he questioned how the next thing you know the guys put a scrach through it saying - thats how. Ended up scratch/pealing it off.

Why? You will attract police and will see less at night risking yourself and the car. Not worth it at all imo

Just took this from dvla description:

The driver or owner of such a vehicle may be issued with an immediate Prohibition Notice and immediately prevented from driving the vehicle on public roads until the tints have been removed and either a Police Officer or Vehicle Inspectorate Office confirms that the glass has been restored to a compliant condition. It is also possible depending on the severity of the offence, that the owner may be prosecuted for driving a vehicle in a non-roadworthy or even dangerous condition with the potential for penalty points and a fine.

It's so that your visibility is clear at the front, there's too many bikers getting pancaked on the roads because of too much tinting at the front of cars etc.

isnt there a legal limit to how much you can get them tinted by?

Tinting of the actual glass YES
Application of a film or other external substance NO

Thats how manufacturers get away with it on big cars like X5's etc
The Glass is actually created with the tint already in it

Back windows can be 100% black

Front windows cant be tinted with anything, even if its permanent or stick on stuff, its still tinted !

Wrong. Front windows have a legal limit. You can not buy a car new with heavily tinted front windows

I've looked in to this and just got pulled for mine on the weekend.

  • The front windows should allow in 75% of light.
  • If they allow less than 30% the car can be seized and a prohibition notice will be issued.
  • There is no legal limit for the rear glass.

My windows allowed 35% light through so I was lucky, and I was also lucky that the officer only gave me a £30 fine. He was aware that the insurance company isn't aware of the tints therefore insurance was void, and told me some officers dish out 3 points for tints easily. So to say the least, he was a cool copper. And he was driving a Vectra!

I have new glass here, just need the time to fit them. Gonna try and do it now actually.

Just so you know, the reason you can have totally black back windows is because otherwise every van would be illegal. They cant say you have to be able to see out of your back windows as vans dont have them.

You can do what ever you like behind pillar B.

As for the fronts, almost standard tint is the limit as the backs block most light as it is. So i was told - just not worth the agro.

The problem seems to arise as a car will pass an MOT with tinted wndows but the Police say its illegal, which it is. Also be aware that most traffic police carry equipment now to test them. Not worth the risk IMO

Window Tints

As of January 1st 2004, new legislation was brought in that prohibits window tinting.

The Law:

You are not allowed to tint your windscreen or front windows AT ALL. Anything forward of the B pillar (middle of the car) MUST NOT be tinted in anyway. You are however still allowed to perform any level of tinting on your back windows.

If you've tinted you windows before January that does not mean that you are safe, if the police believe that your tint causes reduced visibility they can issue you with an order to have it removed.

Why was this law brought in?

The reason this law was introduced was that there was a serious accident between a motorbike and a heavily modified car with very dark tints. It was believed that the root cause of the accident was that the driver couldn't see well enough through his tinted windows.

True.

VOSA say it would be too expensive to supply every single MOT Test Station with equipment to check how dark window tints are, so won't be the part of an MOT test. That's what I read in a little booklet about tints.

A light tint on a car thats blacked out behind pillar B makes a significant difference. But a light tint on the front alone doesnt.

The traffic cops have all the gadgets they need to see if you have significant amount of light entering the vehicle.

Just not worth it, cops are tracking down hard where im from also with DVLA smooching on the sly!
