Hard starting and check engine light when cold and warm

Pretty sure the sensors on a yaris are a close match to the starlet. You can cross-reference the part numbers stamped on them to be sure.

If that rules out the sensor and you are still getting the same code I'd be investigating further - what states the wiring in? (Connector secure/any oil on it/wiring good or brittle/etc)

all the connectors look to be in good shape, no oil weeps from the distributor

That's a single pin switch, looks like the fan switch?

The coolant temp switch is on the coolant housing and should point towards the passenger side.

Didn't realise they were green on a UK spec (white on 4efte).

I'll need to look at a 4efe one later but heres a pic of the goosed one I had to sort on my GT last year. The later ep91 changed to a triangular three pin from memory.

I replaced the temp sensor, car starts and runs great
Only issue is the temp gauge is completely pegged out
What to do now?

you have a secondary sensor, replace that as well :) it is smaller, and only used for the gauge temp
uses a single wire if i remember correctly, and should also be very close to the sensor you just replaced

Sorry about the orientation but it was tricky to get a pic.

It's the rearmost single pin to the bulkhead. Sits slightly below the green plug. Should be black coating on it.

If you have the later type wiring it's all incorporated into the one coolant switch. It's triangular like this.

Hope that helps,

I have the later triangular plug sensor, anything I can do with it to fix the gauge?

SKINY

Lifer
Give the wires a wiggle see what happens, could have damaged them may e pulling things on and off

Loose pin on the wiring possibly as Skiny says, can't see it being at the cluster end seeing as that hasn't been disturbed. Also a quick blast of contact cleaner in case there's any oil in the connector.

Was it a genuine sensor you fitted? Some of the Chinese copies are a bit iffy quality wise just.

It's a Kerr-Nelson sensor, no idea how genuine it is but it doesn't sound like a cheap Chinese clone

i have the grey triangular sensor on my glanza
one of the three wires was broken at the connector and the temperature needle on the gauge cluster did not work at all...i had to remove the little rubber boot/seal, fix the broken wire, and reinstall....i cant remember which color the wire is unfortunately

it was very hard to tell until i took a close look at the connector...the wires become brittle over the years

That sounds a lot more likely than a faulty switch to be honest. Those wires usually get a bit of oil round them which makes the plastic brittle.

yeah, i think the inner distributor seal was leaking (not the outer O-ring) and it has a slight oil weep on to that sensor/connector, which i believed contributed to the wire brittleness...i replaced that distributor a while ago
