Hard starting and check engine light when cold and warm

would brittle wires be causing the gauge to shoot past the red even when the engine isn't running?
the old sensor seems to function properly in relation to the temp gauge, so i'm not conviced it's the wiring

my gauge did not read at all with the broken wire

when my sensor went bad, after a few minutes of driving my temperature gauge would move fairly quickly and register as H (hot) , when the car was actually at the normal operating temperature...so the gauge read incorrectly because of the faulty sensor...the coolant temperature was tested using a multimeter probe to find the problem and a quick swap with a working sensor backed that up

i suppose i should ask around local motor factors for a more trustworthy replacement part to see if that cures the issue

Easy process of elimination - refit the old one and see if the gauge starts working again?

Logic would dictate that there's an issue with the new sensor.. although logic doesn't always work on these cars so no promises :D

As I said, sense and logic lol

Not entirely sure, you could maybe try disconnecting the gauge in case its affecting the signal somehow?

i unplugged the power feed to the gauge and it made no difference.
i'll pull the gauges out and check the connectors are in properly
