Hill climb advice?

So im looking at hill climbing the starlet this year, now where do i start and how do i go about it?

Il be running in the road going 1800 - 2600cc class. So i need rear seats, all interior trim etc.

Now i cant 5e my car if im in this class, but a bigger turbo etc is okay?

Secondly, what are the rules with coilovers etc, am i allowed pillowball top mounts or not?

What in the way of budget is required, as i can only really see that tyres and fuel are the main requirement? I already have a trailer and a vehicle to tow said trailer.

To get started join your local club, a quick google will find this if you dont know. But if its anything like up here its very easy and all the local clubs are full of great people.
Bigger turbo is ok, aslong as its T&T'd and insured. (Thats the main part) I run the same class in mine :)
Im sure there was a MSA rule change regarding the pillow ball mounts to allow them if they were part of the coilover.

As for budget you will also need to pay your entry, fuel both cars, food, water etc etc. It soon mounts up.
Ive done this a good few times now, so as Gord as said, you can fire me a PM or keep it on the board for info for other folk. :)

Im still not 100% on the reg, certainly down here its been a sticky subject, I was pulled up on this and moved to modified production for having adjustable spherical top mounts as they were deemed to move the centre point. I then went to a fixed spherical top mount which was ok for 2011, however Im unsure if it is this season.

Once you have located your local club, you may be best speaking to a scrutineer from the club to clarify how they view the reg. I know at Harewood they arent as fussy about it for example.

Yeah i see what your saying, but im sure there was a rule change that comes in through the year with the MSA magazine that stated that. Mine passed the scutes the other weekend there with no problems? MAbey there having a bit of leaway with competitiors? Either way im going into modifieds next year so i can do as i wish with it :D
But i agree with getting a hold of your local scrutineer and asking all the questions, there very good at answering the silliest of questions.

Yeh its not been very clear cut at all, your right there has been a revised rule, but it can still be read by some scrutineers that the central point cant be moved. It seems to vary venue to venue.

Like you though i'm building the car for mod prod now.

Yep i agree but then again a competitor can read it diffirently ;) Same old goes in racing with loop holes.

And aye im fed up of keeping it T&T'd when i could use the money elsewhere to make it better.

I shall do that, What is the deal with the race licences? Someone said if you join a club you dont need one? Im unsure about how to go about getting one, ive been on the MSA's website but not a whole lot of info about cost etc without actually applying for it!

Now i was going to run my car in the road going class so need full road legal all interior trim etc. What about roll cages? Is this the best class to go in? as its just going to be a hobby and i dont have a MASSIVE budget yknow?

The licence you are looking for is the Sprint National B, IIRC its around £40 for the year. that will allow you to compete. You will still have to join a club of some kind aswell, prices there all depend on the club.

The road car classes are great fun! But yes you can still have a rollcage (not a stupid dog leg cage though) bucket seat and harnesses if you wanted aswell. Depends on how much you want to play by the rules :haha:

As Rory says, you will need an MSA Non Race National B licence, costs £41 through the MSA. You will then also need to consider which venue you want to run at, and then pay a membership fee so you can enter the events, usually not a great cost.

Road going will certainly be you best option, have a good read of the MSA Yearbook and your local clubs supplementary regs to get your head around what you need to do. Feel free to ask any questions you have over any of the regs. You will have to do basic things like taping up the battery terminal and stickering the ignition position locations. A full interior is required, although carpets can be removed. You may be able to get away with running a dash dodger/dog leg cage, I used to run one and although the MSA have ruled them out I have in the back of my head road going classes your actually allowed to run one. Rory may want to correct me there.

You will also need to consider the purchasing of decent fire proof suit (I have a 3 layer suit ), gloves and open or full face helmet (Snell 2005 spec onwards). Race Boots are also a good investment as you get alot more feel through them. Check out these guys if your on a budget : http://www.plays-kool.co.uk/

Anyway, have a good read up and feel free to fire me any questions. If you want to drop me a pm to request my number ill happy chat with you over the phone if you want to discuss things.

HTH :)

Possibly allowed to run a dog leg cage in the road car class as you dont need a cage to run in the road class.

But yes Plays-kool motorsport will see you right, Nick and Luke are superb folk with Hillclimbing and Sprinting experience, 2 x British Champ!

Hello chap give me a ring or pop round to see me in Tavistock. I will tell you every thing you need to know. But just to let you know you better get some practice in because I'll be back next year for that first in class. Lol
