How topassword protect your router?

I take it you're referring to wireless rather than the router itself?

With an idea what router you're using I could offer some more specific advice, however what you should be looking for in general terms is the wireless security features. You should have the option to choose between a few things such as WEP, WPA-PSK, WPA2 etc. These are all different security methods for ensuring people can't arbitrarily view your traffic. I would highly recommend WPA-PSK or if available, WPA2.

From there you need to enter a 'pre shared key' (PSK) which is your basic alphanumeric password. Hopefully you can hit apply or similar, save your settings and exit.. From then on any wireless devices accessing your network will be prompted for that PSK.

Hope i'm not barking up the wrong tree!

Best thing to do is a) Diasble DHCP which will be under "DHCP Table" i wuld guess.. or.. LAN/Wireless LAN

and b) do what Fatman said, which would proberbly be under "Wireless LAN"

wep is in hex format a-f 0-9

so enter something like aaabacadae and it'll work ok.

or change security to WPA-PSK and enter whatever you want (8-15 chars)

Option Wireless LAN then look at page 74 of the manual

1. enable the WEP encryption
2. add a key as follows in the instructions this is your password.

It'll protect ya for a while ;~)

^^^^ as above and make it something you can remember as you will need to enter the WEP key in to all the computers which are connected using the wireless

The router only supports WEP? yikes, that's a bit of a worry.

No need to disable DHCP, clients don't obtain an IP address until their security handshake is complete.

It seems that when I set my router to WPA-PSK that it doesnt allow my laptop to connect as when I check teh properties on laptop it doesnt have the WPA-PSK tab but it does have otehrs..

Also now only letting me connect with limited access... WHy cant it be easier?

what version of windows you using? also, are you using windows zero (windows XP SP2 and later's built in wlan controller) to control the Wireless card or some 3rd party software like whatever came with the card eg belkin, netgear etc?

cos you literally should be able to right click the wireless icon by the clock on startbar, choose view available wireless networks, find your SSID (routers broadcast signal) in the list that pops up, click connect, enter security key and bingo :) non of this 'choose security type' bollocks
