i have just got my car back on the road after the 5e build and i converted it to manual steering to junk the mess of the p/s pump. i have set this up the exact same as when i was running p/s, the only thing changed is the rack....and i dont like it!! when i lift off it swerves towards the hedge... and its bloody scary if not paying attension. but wondering now that i have lost the assistance of the steering i am now suffering from the ramp angles in my diff.

my set up is,

standard shocks
tein 30mm dropped springs
poly bushes
poly antilift kit
standard farb
manual rack
1.5 trd diff (or so im told)
16" wheels
0.15 toe??? (think thats what he said, looked it up in the tracking book)
and as much camber as the holes allow.

powering is ok, its just when i lift off i head for the hedges :(

ball joints and track rods are about a year old. and i got a rack and column from a base model 91. its great for cornering, but just un-nerving when lifting off. everything is tight aswell. gonna be going out tonight in it, so il get better feedback

Manual racks are longer lock to lock compared with their PS counterparts?
Is the rack itself slack? Aye the rack and pinion? Inner tie rods ok? Lower wishbones tight?

What alignment?

this rack is ok, the first 1 was f*cked, felt like a square drive in the pinion. track rods are about 4000mile old if that, i keep blowing it up, so hasnt seen many road miles.

i went with the alignment stated in the book.

Aye what about the inner track rods? They are under the rubber boots on the rack?
Flat tyre on that side? Sticky caliper?

It could be too much camber, how much did the machine show? |I know you said you got an alignment done, was it 2 wheel or 4 wheel?

not sure, my mate looked it up in the book and set to what the book said for alignment. (he is the full time mechanic) as for camber its as much camber as i can get. i think il try less camber due to having added camber due to the ALK. still have to get it back on the tracking to have a play. it was just 2 wheel alignment.

Sounds like to much camber as well, if the specs are available, run it at the max neg camber recommended in the specs and get a 4 wheel alignment done.
