Manifold RANT

i been reading threads about aftermarket manis and stock manis and porting stock manis. its funny how the the sellers of aftermarket parts will always tell you that the stock mani is crap and they even think that even if your 4e is stock it should still have an uprated mani. i think toyota R&D department knows more than ur shop about manifolds. they been making engines since 1934. yes they are mass produced and cast with imperfections but the design is there that they spents tons of time and money R&D which you sir have not.

flowbench test a ported polished stock mani to any of the $400-500 aftermarket ones. the first things these sellers of aftermarket parts will tell you is that the stock mani will crack. if you take off too much metal u lose structural integrity. but then you can stregthen it up on the outside. and aftermarket manis crack all the time. and what are we told to do....weld it up. $600 for the same flow rate and it cracks just like the stock mani and you have to weld it up. you are probably gona heat wrap it anyways so it will just end up looking like a heat wrapped stock mani would

i just hate when people go around stating stuff as fact and saying the best option is to buy stuff from them.

heres some facts.

stock manifolds can flow just as good as the jam and any other aftermarket mani when its ported and polished...FACT

aftermarket manis crack just like stock ones do...FACT

stock manis cost 1/10 of the cost of a aftermarket mani...FACT

the only...and i mean the ONLY benefits from an aftermarket mani is its lighter than the stock one. but hey its shiny (oooooohhhh aaaawwww), you can brag about it to friends, "i have greddy fmic, sard bov, tong hybrid ct9, hks fuel rail, _____ MANIFOLD, blah blah blah", and it might even come with a cool sticker for you to put on your car.

i think if you have the money to spend then hey buy w.e makes u happy. but its just so stupid when some1 is told by a seller that they should buy an aftermarket mani when they are running stock boost levels or something like 0.8bar. these manis were R&D to hold up stock boost. so of course if your pushing 21 psi you should get a mild steel one.

idk just my thoughts. anyone have input?

Well done.

I think its all down to personal preference, my stock mani was ported, and boost tailed off at high rpms, my m/s mani now boosts a bar all the way to near enough the limiter.

I work in the Automotive Sector (at the Mini Plant to be exact), and I can tell you from experience that EVERYTHING is built to a price and spec. That spec being a standard car. They also spend much more money on HOW they build the car rather than it's long term performance. Hence, they put a lump in the mani due to the location of a bolt I'm led to beleive. A bolt for a flimsy heat shield.

Its actually a bolt that holds the turbo on ;)

Yup...at the end of the day I'm sure Toyota designed that manifold to work extremely well with a stock 4EFTE engine - that is there job after all! Its only when you want to run more boost/generate more heat that the restriction becomes an issue...

Fair enough for ranting, but I don't think its going to achieve very much! lol And who exactly is it even aimed at?

Thats a bit of a rant there but the point is, yes the standard ones are good units but I would think if your putting big power and boost through the 4efe you may well need an aftermarket one :)

Of course sellers will say their aftermarket part is better than the standard one, they wouldn't sell anything if they said the standard item's just as good. Dosent just apply to manifolds either :)

As dave pointed out.the restriction in runner 3 is one of the studs that hold the turbo on. If you grind it away you run the risk of having problems. Also a ported standard manifold will crack due to the fact that the iron expands by a fair amount when hot.
What most people don't seem to understand that you get what you pay for,and if you do buy a cheap manifold you will have problems
buy a good one and it will last.

no directed to any1. i put wicked ONCE and thats cuz it was the first aftermarket mani to come to mind. but i decided not to put a name because some1 would think it was directed towards them but in fact its a different company. everytime theres a mani thread he posts and writes a sales pitch.

and this is a rant i dont expect it to do/change anything but just get read.

stock manifold is good for stock power..... thats what it was designed for

the restriction in 3rd runner does cause that runner to get hotter than the others, hence why they crack even on standard cars running standard boost... cars running more boost than stock are increasing the chances of it cracking here due to the increase of heat.

aftermarket manifolds can crack yes, but quality of metal used plays a big part in this.. you do get what you pay for in most cases. if you buy an ebay one for £99 then dont expect it to last that long.

if you want to run a different turbo other than the ct9 you have little choice than to change manifold to an aftermarket one with the correct flange.

bit of a pointless rant really, as the stock manifold isnt the best design, simply because of that restriction in the 3rd runner.. that alone is enough reason to upgrade to an aftermarket mani in my opinion

imo there is more than enough material left to retain the stud after the lump in the third runner has been completly removed. i've had no problems and i have been running one for 11 months, the last two on tdo4 with the use of a weejohn adapter plate.

surely the cast standard mani will expand far less than the aftermarket manis due to the fact that the cast is a lot thicker

So a ported standard mani on a hybrid ct9 running 1.2 bar would have the same flow rate and perform as well as a zisco?
Doubt it very much!!!:freddy:

Also that 3rd runner in the standard mani is known to coos engine failures when running over stock boost in some cars. In the long run its only a matter of time before you ditch you standard mani for an aftermarket unit. Like dantheman said you get what you paid for like with everything.

i didn't say that

Thanks again Chris for sorting me out with one of these , some very tidy porting .
I'm see .90 bar boost compared to .93 boost on the other mani, so I'm guessing they're very close flow wise, pickup seems a bit quicker.

I'll try and get a few more comparison pictures up on Sunday.(depending how the pictures come out)

Cheers Richey:

clearly the ej racing manifolds cant be far away from the fancy looking one's
