I was on my way to crail for some drag racing this sunday just passed, the first round-a-bout out of town i put the foot down in 2nd gear... hitting the limiter for a second then car let out 2 backfires and in the rear view i see black smoke and i think flames

The car was dying on me so i pulled over, water temp was fine and still had good oil press before it cut out and no holes in the block no oil or water leaks, the car was not keen to start but we did get it to idle for 20 seconds but it ended up cutting out.

I got a tow home from a mate and then jumped in gary91's glanza and headed down.

*no discoloured oil
* compression test all came out at 150-155 so all were fine.
* BUT plug 4 had oil around the threads but NOT on the spark plug electrode (maybe the seals)
*all plugs were a tan colour none were black or white but there are pritty old by the look of them.
*no bad noises from the engine either
*no water mixing with oil anywhere to be seen either

what do you guys think?

forged engine, zisco inlet and exhaust manifold, TD05 18G, dastek piggy back, srd fpr, denso 460cc injectors and ALL supporting mods.

The head was stripped to change valve springs, stem seals and head gasket 2 months ago, but it has done well over 1000 miles with no problem and it has been driven hard a very good amount of times.

it is running an old map but it was on a dyno day a few months ago and i was told it was running fine and it was safe.

only thing changed was i got super unleaded from a garage that i dont really use. and no its not got diesel in it lol

i will change a few things and keep you guys posted

Try looking for ignition related problems. Most times it leads to that. Check to see if you get a solid signal from the dizzy. Check plug gap etc etc

have you checked for spark?

could possibly be the distributor

check for vac leaks, mainly the hose that goes to the map sensor.

try removing the dastek to see if runs ok without it, so you can rule that out.

theres a million and one things

the plug leads are only a few months old and the ignitor is also in very good nic, it did start ok and did not run very long 20 seconds, the spark plugs do seam to be a fair age but i shall change them and have a very good look over everything this weekend!

I will keep you posted

An awesome car with a dastek chip is a bad combination bud :(
This side of the world we treat those chips like a Lays chip that fell on the ground... No one wants it haha!
Could be vacuum problem or fuel pump?
What is the boost gauge reading on idle? That is if you could get it running :p

I had narrowed the probblem down to the coil pack/igniter (no spark), And then i had a little think *what is always the problem i have when the car is not getting a spark... and it was always a bad earth*

I ran an earth cable from the negative terminal of the battery to the coil park/igniter bracket ... it started to spark! plugged in the king lead and she fired into live and is running fooking great!!!

I also made another earth from the engine to bulk head and an extra from the negative terminal of the battery to the chassis

How can my earthing be so bad??

im pretty sure my starlets earing is bad too... ive added an earthing kit to various pioints in the engine bay, its better but still not great. might be worth replacing the battery terminals and earthing cable.
