I'm off to New York in May with the mrs. We are only there for six days and obviously want to see the major sites like statue of liberty, central park, broadway, shops, times square etc etc, just wondered if any one has experience of the city, knows of anywhere worth seeing that we may not have thought of. Also how easy is the subway to use? I use the underground a lot so I should be ok? Lastly any hotel recommendations we havent booked this yet I wondered if anyone knows of anything reasonable in manhattan?

Hi mate, not posted on here for a while lol

I was in New York this time last year mate, and i absolutely loved it, im sure you will too, i wish i was there for new years!!!

Anyway 6 days will be very good for what your wanting to do, as i went for 4 and managed to see all the sites worth seeing, it was up early, and early for bed just so you had enough daylight.

I would recomend the empire state building during the daytime, as you get a great view of the city, but would recomend the rocafella center at nighttime as the city looks awesome all lit up.

We did the ferry to the statue of liberty, you can spend a few hours there, good museum and stuff, but i dont think you can actually go in the statue any more which is a shame. i think the ferry takes you to the other surrounding islands too.
Also they do a helicopter ride for the statue.

Ground zero was a sight to see, is really wierd standing there. The builders get abit funny when taking pictures though ;S guess its disrespectful :(

Broadway shows are worth seeing, we saw one one evening, very good, even though its not my thing lol

Macys and Bloomingdales are the 2 big shopping centres, could easily spend all day looking around them both as Macys is the biggest in the world iirc..

We took a walk to and from the natural history museum through central park which was great.

We did all that in 3 days i think, things we missed was the ferry tour around manhatten, but it was absolutely freezing at this sort of time of year lol a trip to the yankees stadium would of been nice too!

Theres a coupon book that they sell at all the main attractions, i think it was $80, and gave you entry to all the attractions in there, think there was 8, so a nice saving there too.

I would reccomend the The Western New York for accomodation, was a really nice hotel, just used it for sleep, ate out all the time, and its great as its only a 2 minute walk to Time Square which is awesome!!!

Ps. the underground.... has some wierd people on it lol

Some pictures of my time there here:

Dont go near Central Park at night, I was there with my relatives and they made us cross the street to walk past the entrance and cross back again once we were past. They said no one would help you out if you got mugged or attacked there, mad really. Grenwich Village square is pretty cool during the day as well, but again you need to keep aware, we used the subway during the day with no problems, the traffic is manic so its the easy way about.

Even if you are not into that sort of thing, I would go to a musical in Broadway. There are plenty there that are full of great performers and modern, its a great night out. It has its problems like any big city but its a 24 hour place, we went to the cinema at 3am as it was so hot in the apartment we were staying in the air con couldnt keep up, the cinema had air con so it was a pleasant relief!

I really loved New York, would head back again and do it all over.

Found the Subway to be a breeze, only seen one bust up after some fella felt up another fellas woman, slightly funny at the time.

I'll not go over all the same stuff the other fellas have mentioned about the sites, instead a couple of places I went to which I enjoyed was Bubba Gumps restaurant, themed on the Forrest Gump film. http://www.bubbagump.com/locations/new-york-city/

Also in Times Square there's a huge ToysRus which I enjoyed having a walk around. http://www.ratestogo.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/toysrus.jpg

Also went to one of the Comedy nights, there was people on the street selling tickets, as we walked along the street the price dropped from $30 a ticket to 2 for $6 as long as we bought something to eat in there.

You'll have a great time though and the New Yorkers are a nice bunch of people.

I stayed at the hilton in NY and it was amazing, room service the lot! The jet lag will mess you up but i loved walking around new york at like 1-2 in the morning, still have subways open and its just so american, sounds really bent but i loved it so much becuase it was actually just like it is in movies.
No matter what you do you will have an amazing time, i wouldnt plan anything incase it goes wrong and starts stressing you out! Its identical to london really distance wise between attractions (say 15 minute walk between alot of the best with pelnty of shops on the way)
You will have a fantastic time!
