Hello Oilman, my dad has a 2003 Mondeo 2.0 TDCI 130 6 speed. The car has been decated, de egr'ed and will be getting remapped in the coming weeks. What Engine and gearbox oil would you recommend? On your website, it comes up 75/90 semi and fully for the gearbox. Which one would be better? These gearbox's can be a bit weak I have heard.

Hi

Technically you need an oil that meets the Ford 913B specification and our selection is listed below.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-698-wss-m2c-913-b.aspx

They are fine for normal use in your car, but if you want oils that give the best protection (and if you are out of warranty, as Ford will not officially allow these oils to be used, even thought they are a much higher specification that their 913 spec oils) Motul Eco-Energy, Shell Helix Ultra Extra, Fuchs Titan Pro C1, Castrol Edge, Millers XF, Silkolene Pro S, Motul 300V, Amsoil and Redline will give much better protection.

Yes, a 75w-90 is right for the gearbox.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-673-75w-90.aspx

If you want to go for the best, the Millers CRX 75w-90 NT, Gulf Competition, Motul Gear 300, Redline MT90 and Millers TRX are ideal for the gearbox. The Castrol Universal, Motul Motylgear and Fuchs Gear Syn are all decent alternatives.

Cheers

Hello Oil Man as per your recommendation i bought this

Its Fuchs Titan MC Syn 10W40 , the dealer also had 20w/50 Titan super gt which i did`nt bought . He said that you can run the 10/40 one till 8000 Kms . However i`ll be changing it at around 2 - 2.5kms

Did i made the right choice ?

Whats your opinion on using 5w-40 Fully Synthetic on these engines over what Toyota recommend (5W-30 OR 10W40 Semi Synthetic)

I have heard of a few people that its almost too good to use on an engine which is now a 20odd year old design, Is it an actual advantage of running this over a good semi synthetic?

Thanks

I have tried both and yes it is advantage compared to old 10W40 style oil, but that's not the question you should ask. The question is if your engine has high mileage new oil (which cleans better and gives better protection because it's thinner) will cause seal leaks and eventually you will have to replace all the seals in your engine - learned on my own experience! So if you have a new rebuild engine by all means use new fully synthetic oil, if you have a very old one, then think if you can afford to replace all the engine seals or not?

Yes, it is an advantage to run it over a semi - a good synthetic will give much better protection. Also, seals should not be an issue, quality oils contain agents designed to swell the seals. If the seals aren't good, it may leak, but it should not be any worse with a synthetic than a semi.

Oils are not too 'good' for an engine, they might be wrong, but not too good. That's well proven, including one of the friends of our owner driving a 1931 Austin 7 from John O'Groats to Lands End and back using the Fuchs Pro R 20w-50 Ester synthetic oil.

Hello Tim & Matt

I have 4efte forged engine on my slalom/rally car in tropical weather (Mauritius)
before installing oil cooler I was getting very high oil temp (up to 145°C). so I installed an oil cooler last year.
on start line engine oil is around 70/75°C, on finish line it reach 115°C
I have been using Castrol edge 10w60 Full synthetic until now

Make: Toyota
Model: Starlet EP85 with glanza V engine
Year: 1996(engine)
Engine size/type: 1.3 turbo

Any mods: stock block with garret gt2052 turbo upgrade, afpr, fuelpump. FMIC and free flow exhaust 2.5''

Type of use (road/track) Road use and drag racing
Additional info (max oil temps, current oil used) - No idea on the oil temps, currently using exon 10w-30 and gearbox oil don't know what's in it i want to change it but don't know what to use. it's a AWD manual gearbox

What do you recommend for engine and Gear box. **Note: i live in a tropical country(Suriname) is there a difference between tropical and cold weather??

thanks

Hi

Personally, I'd go for a 10w or 15w-50, but a good quality one as it will flow better than the 10w-60, but I don't know what you have available.

Cheers

Hi

It comes down to oil temps really, the air temp isn't as important as that. If the oil is going over 130C, you want to be using a 10w-50 or 15w-50, under that a 10w-40 should be the best option. I'd still use a 75w-90 in the gearbox.

Hello Tim, 5 years ago, I was using 15W50 shell full synth, but Shell stopped this grade and now provide 5w40 only :(
I loved 15W50. The only 15w50 full synth available in the country is Yacco which comes in 2 littre bottle and is quite expensive. I have never seen 10w50. only affordable full synth I've found are 5w40 and 10w60. I'll try to dig around for 10w50 if there is any new grade available.
thanks for you help

How can you explain that I never had a single leak till went to a Ester based 5W40 which with in 6-8 months caused me a lot of hassle with the engine seals! BY no means I'm saying that it's a bad oil, it is in indeed a lot better than 10W40 Semi-Synthetic but is it really the cause for the leaking oil seals? Cam seals, crank seals, dip stick seal, oil pump seal, etc....

It could be a coincidence. Which oil is it? Several years ago, when synthetics came out first of all, there were issues with seals and the oil, but then the manufacturers realised that's no good for them and worked on the formula so that decent oil helps prevent the seals from leaking.

Yes mate thats what i meant by too good lol, will it cause seal leaks etc with it being that good!?

Engine isnt that high mileage, doesnt use a drop of oil and its always mega clean when checked...

Occasionally someone may have a slight leak as they might change from a thicker oil to a thinner one, but no one has ever said to me that all their seals went in a few months after changing to synthetic.
